I have this really large abcess on my gum line. It looks as if it's going to burst. It really hurts. Should I poke it with a sterial needle and let it drain for relief?

Yes you can drain it to get temporary relief. Just know that it will no resolve the underlying problem, probably a dead tooth. You need to have the dead tooth either treated or extracted. The infection has spread through the bone and under the gum. Each time it swells the underlying bone is eaten away a tiny bit more. If you continue to drain it over and over again your bone will be permanently lost or affected badly. You can get a bone cyst which grows and spreads to other teeth. It's not a good long term situation.

Get it taken care of.

I have heard of ppl doing that, I wouldn't recommend it however. Call your dentist or the e.r. and they will be able to get you a prescription for amoxicillian or something just as good. With in a half hour or so, it should drain on its own, always has for me anyhow. This way, your not taking a chance of germs which could lead to a even worse infection. Good Luck!! For some comfort, take a pain killer and apply a warm pack.

Go to a dentist, who will give you an antibotic and pain medication for a few days and then start working on you tooth. May need to be pulled or maybe he can save it with a root canal. don't touch it yourself, as you may risk infection which will make it even worst.

I usually do that -- what's "right", I don't know. I haven't had one in so long. Rinse your mouth after breaking it -- try not to swallow the pus. (Won't kill you if you do.)

I usually take straight, sour (nothing added) cranberry juice for toothaches and infections (warm 8 ounces & chug -- repeat dose as needed). [Juice is available at health food stores and most grocery stores.]
