The Bible also speaks of spiritual adultery. It is unfaithfulness to the vow of dedication on the part of a Christian. As the disciple James expresses it: “Adulteresses, do you not know that the friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever, therefore, wants to be a friend of the world is constituting himself an enemy of God.” Since the course of the world is directed by Satan the Devil, one cannot be pleasing it and please Jehovah God at the same time.—Jas. 4:4.

The Creator, Jehovah God, is the final arbiter of morals. His decree against adultery is both just and wise. All who would please God, enjoy happiness and long life must exercise great care to avoid adultery in whatever form it may be, physical, mental or spiritual.—1 Pet. 3:10-12.

The Christian congregation is viewed in Scripture as a bride and must, therefore, preserve virgin purity or chastity. (2 Cor. 11:2) Any unfaithfulness to the Christ also constitutes disloyalty to his Father. Even in pre-Christian times, Jehovah God regarded the unfaithfulness of the Israelites as adultery. Israel, for example, was guilty of prostitution when the people became involved in idolatry or when, instead of looking to Jehovah, they began looking to foreign nations for protection. (Ezek. 16:15-19, 25-45) Because they had turned away from God, Jesus called his generation an “adulterous” one. (Matt. 12:39) Hence, in addressing certain Christians as adulteresses, the disciple James was showing that they were no longer pure from the standpoint of Jehovah God and Jesus Christ.

In a spiritual sense, adultery denotes unfaithfulness to Jehovah on the part of those who are joined to him in a covenant.Natural Israel was, therefore guilty of spiritual adultery because of false religion practises, some of which included sex-worship rites and disregard for the seventh commandment
(Jer.3:8,9;5:7,8;9:2;13:27;)
For similar reasons Jesus denounced as adulterous the generation of Jews in his day(Mt.12:39;Mr.8:38).
Likewise today,if Christians who are dedicated to Jehovah and who are in the new covenant defile themselves with the present system of things, they commit
spiritual adultery.-James 4:4.

Just what it sounds like. As Christians, we are betrothed to Christ and any time we are unfaithful to Him in word, deed or thought we are guilty of adultery. My question for all those who so cavalierly opt out of a failed marriage through the so called "adultery clause" in Matthew 5:32; will they then be surprised at His divorcing them for the same reason?

Spiritual adultery is when you have a relationship with a God and show respect and homage to that God over the True and Living God.
