I teach human and physical geography and one of the major things we discuss is culture. There are so many levels of culture- they range from broad to very personal. If you live in the Western Hemisphere your ideals, outlook, politics, and standard of living are much different than if you live in the Eastern Hemisphere. If you live in Europe, you're bound to have cultural influances that someone from the United States won't have been exposed to. If you live in Alaska you are probably going to have a much different cultural upbringing than if you are living in Florida. Children learn what they live. A child isn't going to think about how something is done differently on the other side of the world because they're in a stage where their main focus is getting their needs met and learning how to do things where they live. Culture is spread from one generation to another- passed down through parents and other adults in a child's community. Eventually as we reach adulthood we can manipulate and change our personal culture when we find something that suits us better, but as children we take what we're given and form our ideas and attitudes from our own little experiences.

Culture has a great deal to do with a child's development. It affects them from birth. Physical as well as cognitive development. Piaget and Vygotsky are both great theorist that cover environmental effects on child development. Read up on Socio-Culture theory.

By nurturing the child and allowing them to be a child, while setting safe boundaries around them. This does not mean letting them run wild, nor does it mean stifling them, but finding that balance in between. It also means having an agreement on what is acceptable and what is not so the child knows the 'rules' stay the same.

Wow! What an awesome question. It is interesting that as adults we wonder just how much culture our children should really "experience". To put this in much simpler form, we should all just look back at our lives. Why are we the way we are, the way we think, the way we act, and the way we react? Culture has everything to do with it.
Good question...

Culture is vital to a child's success in school. This is one reason for the Head Start program. When a child continually sits in front of the TV watching cartoons and has no exposure to books, public places like zoos and museums or social interaction with other children, they are essentially robbed of culture. I worked with children in the past who didn't know the names of common objects like: grape, elephant, grapefruit, fork, knife- things the majority of us take for granted. When they start school not even knowing common objects, they can't identify items in language/phonics books.

Nothing can impact/influence children more than good, loving parents...
Life, as they experience it from the cradle
to the classroom and on into college age is what shapes their mind & heart, the seat of motivation. But it's never too late to set a good example for them, which we should do

I'm sure it has some affect, as does genetics (not much, but some) and upbringing, but overall I'm with the philosopher SARTRE on this one. In simplified terms (I won't bore you) what happens in your life is above all your fault. Your choices create you fate, no matter what anyone else does or says to you.
