Very important. There are some great oils out there with spf 2 or 4 that will still give you a tan and ONLY block out dangerous rays. It won't block the good stuff you're going for. When I was in colleg I only used baby oil. I said the same thing.......I'm fine. My skin can take it. Its the "long term" effects.......not just one time out in the sun. So now.......at my age *cough* (which we so don't need to mention) I'm realizing why I needed the SPF back then. So try at least a minimal amount......and you'll still that you tan beautifully. I'd hate to hear about those mellanoma patches on your skin years from now.
Good luck :)

Wow, there are still many people out there who think it's ok to go without sun protection! I "tanned " every summer as a kid and teen and wish like hell I hadn't. It matters VERY much that you protect your skin, REGARDLESS of your skin tone. Even if you never suffer any type of abnormal cell growth due to overexposure, the BEST way to get old-looking really fast is to go out unprotected. It's not a myth and not a joke. Fine lines and age spots, in addition to "crepe"- looking skin, are dead giveaways that someone thought a tan was really important. People can spend lots of money trying to undo the damage done by the sun, but overexposure (tanning) is one of those things that seems great at the time and is VERY COSTLY later...can't say, "Damn, I should not have done that" and turn back the clock. In fact, it's the sun you take early in your life that shows up most later. Think about it. A tan doesn't last either- you have to keep doing it over and over. Friends will envy you when you are 30,40,50 because healthy skin is as obvious as damaged skin.

Just because you don't sunburn doesn't mean you aren't causing damage. It is especially important in this day and age to protect yourself, since the ozone is fading away. You can get skin cancer, and your skin WILL BE very wrinkly at a pretty young age if you tan all the time now. You can protect yourself and still get a tan if you use sun SCREEN not sun BLOCK. Use an SPF15 Sunscreen and you can have the best of both worlds.

The sun continually produces UV radiation: UV-A and UV-B rays reach the earth and are a major cause of skin damage like skin aging, sun-burn, immune suppression, and even skin cancer.
The two main ways of protecting the skin today are applying a sunscreen lotion to the exposed areas or simply covering the skin with a garment.

Yes you should!
Baby oil may help you get a tan, but it won't protect you from any ultraviolet rays from the sun. You could end up getting skin cancer.

Yes, it's important, even if you tan. Just because you didn't burn doesn't mean your skin wasn't damaged. Tanning is the body's response to skin damaged by ultraviolet light.
When you're young it's no big deal, but keep it up and you'll be at risk for skin cancer.

YES!!! It's VERY important!! Even dark-skinned folks can get skin cancer. If you don't feel like buying lotion that you have to rub in, then go buy the Coppertone spray. All you do is spray it on and it's done. It maybe takes 5 seconds versus a lifetime of scars from skin cancer removal.

some kid at my school got skin cancer, when he was only 15 years old! he's fine, but if your skin can get that messed up that quickly, sun protection is very important. why take the risk?

It can give you skin cancer if you don't wear sun protection. Even SB45 helps a lot.
