Because at the time men were in charge and didn't have much respect for women, so having it saying women must be treated as inferior made Christianity more popular. On the point of it scaring children, by scaring children telling them you will spend etenity in pain if you don't do this is a pretty good way of making them join and believe your club.

The bible was written by men who lusted for power. Moses was such a man, he was clever and manipulative, he knew that the tribe of superstitious, ignorant savages that were the ancient Hebrews were gullible enough to believe the codswallop he dished out. He invented a religion and a god to go with it. He then told his foolish followers that they had to behave and think in a certain way as it was commanded by a 'higher authority. Religions have always manipulated people through fear and false promises. They have a a political agenda to pursue and non-believers who stand in their way are called blasphemers or heretics or atheists and dealt with. Religion is all about empire building to increase their power and control over as many people as possible.
