The egg.
w_xsoadx_w is right. An animal that would formally still be in the class of "dinosaurs", layed an egg that contained an animal that, by random chance (part of the evolutionary process), was modified just enough to belong to the new class of "chickens", and was born.
The chicken egg was there before the chicken itself.

probably the egg, because dinosaurs had eggs before chickens were ever around. Some some certain animal just evolved into a chikcen.
