Give him something less messy to play with when he's not eating, and keep him a little hungrier so he'll eat his food.

It's not too early to try teaching him to eat better. He won't be perfect at this age, but he's old enough to know not to throw food or put it in his hair. You must have the patience of a saint if you are able to laugh about it knowing you have a mess to clean up! Slowly start trying to break him from the habit, but don't be too abrubt or harsh. Thinking it's funny one day then trying to discipline him the next will only confuse him so make it a gradual change.

relax it will come later... just have him sit with the family at meals, he will begin to notice that the rest of you don't eat like that and will start to change.... so for now put up with as much as you can...but draw the line somewhere...you can put your hands in it but it's not ok to throw it at the dog or anything else for that matter. buy a plate with a suction cup bottom or put the food directly on the tray...when out get him only "clean " foods , to avoid embrassment if he wants something that will make a mess offer it to him one bite at a time.
and aways offer him a baby spoon and fork even if he doesn't use them

My suggestion is to put a shower curtain under his highchair. Makes cleanup a lot easier. And yes, it is time to teach him it is unacceptable to throw food. When he does this, tell him, "I can see you're through eating. Shall I take your plate now?" The trick to this is, once you've taken his plate, make him wait at least half an hour before you give it back. If he says he's hungry, tell him, "You were throwing food so mealtime is over. You'll have to wait till next mealtime." Trust me, he'll fuss, both he won't starve in 30 minutes. I promise, you won't have to do this more than a few times. He'll get the message. Good luck!

I think it's too early for him. This is a learning process. At eating time give him something that he can play with but not too messy and a spoon. And you keep feeding him until you see progress on him. This may take 1 month, 6 months or even a year or more. So be patient with him.

My brother made a huge mess when he was eatting too. My mom put trash bags under his chair until he was 7 years old to protect the floor from his filth. But, eventually, he just grew out of it.
If it were me, I would try to teach him not to throw food around...that could be a really bad habit in the making.

Quite normal - my son is still doing this at 2. Give him food that is less messy and spread plastic on the floor around his chair. Make sure he is hungry before you feed him. And remember, the dog makes a great vacuum.

haha, i think that is all kids, but u can start by telling "no thats not the way to do it" and show him the right way. he'll learn, also try not to give him big amounts of food, serve him a bit on his plate and when he finishes that give him a bit more that can also help reduce the mess, good luck

arent kids great? My 14 month old doesn't even get ahold of his plate, but he makes a mess too, but I don't think as bad. Try taking his plate from him and putting his food on his tray for him to feed hisself.
