Yeah, the door was open, but if the police find him, what's the diff?
I think you meant to say that the police (more likely the guards) discovered that he was gone, or found that he was gone.

he got out thru the hole in the floor or the trap door in the ceiling (not vice versa b/c then it wouldnt work)

well if you did leave something out like i think you did it was had a wooden bench and a saw that could only cut through wood but he cut the bench in half and put them together because 2 halves make a whole
