It is great I would not recomend any distribution in particular as it is just a matter of personal preference.

You have to write the ISO to a CD using a compatible program like Nero Burning ROM

There are versions which can run from the CD letting you see them in operation without having to install to the Hard Drive

I've tried almost all the Linux distros and can recommend only two: Novell Linux Desktop 9 (free download and 60 days of updates) and Ubuntu Linux (also free download).

try searching for linux distribution names like
mandrake
debian
s.u.s.e
red hat

all these sites have a free version of linux you can download, typically its the size of a few cds or a dvd, so it takes time to download

or try looking in shops for any magazine with linux in the title, many of these magazines give you at leat one version of linux

for dual boot, try redhat or one of its derivatives like white box, they tend to work best.Ubuntu and slackware are pretty good too. Just search for them!

You could also try knoppix, which runs from CD if you just want to get a taste for linux
