the best way to walk the dog is to point rod tip towards lure and down towards the water. Then with shot jerks downward {maybe 6 inches at a time to start] increase or decrease the tempo to find the right cadence for the lure you are using. All lures will differ slightly. I feel the use of superbraids makes walking the dog a lot easier being that there is no stretch. At first ,don"t try real long casts , shorter casts will help you find the right cadece easier.Walking the dog is an exceellent method for catching fish in both fresh and salt water. hope this helps

"Walking the Dog" with a lure is zig zagging it across the surface. You can do this by puting your rod at a downward angle pointed towards 5 o'clock and realing it in with short little tugs no more than 10 inches. If you are beginning this technique I've found that it's easier if, with pliers, you tilt the eyelet downard. This will help you have more control of the lure. One really good topwater for this technique is the Heddon Zara Spook.

Generally..."walkng" a lure involves moving it in or across the water at the speed where it produces the most action ... that makes it the most attractive to fish. But it also depends on the lure.... a crankbait, buzzbait, top water, popper, floating worm, etc.... all have different walking characteristics.

Twitch the rod tip and reel, the lure will zig-zag back and forth during the retrieve. I personally have never had much luck using top-water stick baits.
