The responses you got till now screm "no". They do not want to accept it.

# India has second largest population of Muslims. If Hindus were not tolerant in genral , after the Islamic atrocities in India and all those riots (e.g. Noakhali) by Muslims in India , they would not have been living peacfully here.

# India has been refuge of people all over the world who were percecuted in their own country -Jews, Zorostrians(parasees in India), Buddhists, even Muslims from countries Afganistan, Bangladesh and even Pakistan(Karachee riot victims ).

#If Hindus wouldn't have tolerant Christian missionries like Cooper would not have been blaming Krishna for AIDS and calling him a satan in India. He left India in one piece, unharmed .

#The fact that christion missioneries dare to slaughter ?Hindus in India (north east), ban Practicing Hinduism in India use all kinds of dirty tricks for conversion and still live peacefully proves the tolerance.

I am not saying that all missioneries are violent fanatics but a considerable number is. Personally I am, sick of hate propoganda propogated by christian evangelists.

# Hinduism's greatest feature has been its positive ideas and those who do not belong to it are not infidels or heretics. Hinduism does not believe in bringing about a mechanical uniformity of belief and worship by a forcible elimination of all that is not in agreement with a particular creed. Hindus have never conquered, plundered or committed genocides on other peoples and they never will, primarily because the deeper values According to the Bhagavad Gita:

"I am alike to all being." "None is hateful or dear to me. " The Rig Veda, the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita hold that all paths lead to the summit. "As men approach me so do I accept them. Men on all sides follow my path."

#Someone above said judaism is oldest and she researched (?) it.
Judaism states world was created 6000 years ago. Hindu beliefs predate that "creation".

# Yes , Gandhi was killed by a Hindu. So? Kenedy and so many other presidents of US were killed by Christians.Does it become reflection of Christians as a community?

I doubt if West realises the circumstances even slightly that lead to Gandhi's death.

NOTE:
Most Christians today (and most scholars of religion) would be scandalized if the feudal system, slavery, capitalist exploitation or anti-Judaism were used to define the essence of Christianity. They would understand these things to be historically and socially bound and not part of Christian universal ideals. In short, descriptions of Christianity in textbooks would distinguish the core or essence of Christian theology from specific social, historical and political contexts. However, Hinduism is not treated in the same way.

It does seem that the caste system, as understood today, was foisted on Indian society by its Western (Christian) oppressors, the British. Efforts within Hindu society to reform itself, and to provide a new vision of Hinduism, are too often ignored or downplayed.

"No other civilization saw, appreciated, and classified so precisely the full spectrum of human personality types…an achievement that has earned for India – the title of the world’s introspective psychologist.

"India identified four such types and once again honored all of them. Likening society to an organism, she pictured Brahmins - its head, Brahmins are intellectuals, their chief delight in art, ideas, and things of spirit generally.

Next come the arms and shoulder of society – its administrative - persons who are talent for getting things done

Next personality type – the artisan or craftsmen – the engineer and the farmer – India likens these people to society’s stomach – for they produce and feed us the things on which life depends.

Finally, manual labor is important too. They are the legs and feet without which society could not run.”

(source: The Mystic's Journey - India and the Infinite: The Soul of a People – By Huston Smith).

Caste systems in India evolved, just as they have done in the US, as a labor group by the kind of work. This is why each of India's castes corresponds to a category of labor, much like the modern guild of American workers of a given profession, with its own procedures for membership and strategies to compete with outsiders. In India, this segmentation got perpetuated because training was done through work apprenticeship under one's parents, thereby turning family lineages into specialized labor.

There are Hindus who are more tolerant than Christians.
Most Hindus have an Eastern way of thinking. When people think of Christians, they think of Western Christians, who obviously have a Western way of thinking. Our Western culture is very less tolerant.

However, there are tolerant Christians. People are so vastly different that tolerance is dependent on the person, not whom or what the person is following (barring intentionally intolerant faiths).

But if you were looking for a Christian to fess up to your question, I just did. And I'm sorry for my fellows' intolerance, oppression, or alienation. Everyone deserves better than that.

God Bless. Love Wins.

Most people do not even know what tolerance means, because they listen to the garbage that the liberal media spews forth. True christians are very tolerant. There is a difference between toleration and acceptance. Likewise, there is a difference in accepting the sinner, but not the sin.

Definitely so. Hinduism was around before Judaism according to the chronology of their respective scriptures. Hinduism spawned Buddhism while Judaism spawned Christianity... And Buddhism predates Christianity by about 500 years or so.

So the question now arises: Which one of the four listed religions will you attach your spiritual beliefs to??

Peace be with you!

I can agree with the "far older" part, but tolerant? Hindus are the ones who made up the rigid caste system, complete with worthless untouchables doomed to a life of menial labor (since they were evil in their past lives).

/not Christian, just my opinion

All racists are christians...so should we take racism as a dogma of christianity ?

Caste system does not have roots in Hindu philosophy and Krishna has clearly refuted caste system in Gita saying - all can reach me irrespective of caste, creed and gender"

Caste system is a social evil of India...not of hindus. Even the christians and muslims in India believe in caste system. I have myself seen hundreds of muslims/christians not eating with /having social contacts with untouchables... But things are changing now with education and economy boost.

As regards not eating with christians.... Most of the hindus believe not eating from the vessels where meat is cooked. since most of the hindus are vegetarians and it is a sin eating beef in hinduism, they dont mix with beef-eaters.... it is just to keep their faith not to hate anyone.

You people are believing the history which is written by Westeners to suit their ideas.

When most of the people in americas and europe, were learning to lit fire with the help of stones....Hindu Sages were busy in finding the mysteries of the Universe.

I agree it's older, and in what way is it more tolerant? If it is or isn't, I don't have a problem with it. As long as they don't claim to be as "peaceful" as Islam!
