It is NOT just once a month - save household bills. Credit card companies are pretty sneaky - 20 to 25 days is the grace period on bills. That means the statement date will not be the same each month. Learn to read those tiny print pamphlets that come w/ credit cards.

Learn the APR, annual fees, what happens to your interest rate if you go over limit, pay late.

No matter what, it is crucial that you pay in full each and every time the bill comes. Only then do you have negotiating power w/ the credit card agencies.

Don't believe the hype that you should carry a small balance on a card to "show payment history."

Sadly, on your first day of school on Campus you will have multiple offers of pre-approved student Visa, Mastercard, Discover, just waiting for you to sign on the dotted line.

If you can't bring yourself to plow through ALL the disclosures in tiny print, then don't sign up for them. College credit is literally the path to financial hell.

The billing is once a month. Opening a savings and checking is best. If you are trying to establish credit, being a student, I would only apply for one, keep timely payments and do not abuse or impulse spend, that is the biggest downfall to most younger people starting out, they tend to go charge clothes, and items that are not essential. Use it to purchase gas, etc., and make your payments each month, and keep the balance low.

Once a month. Don't open a credit card if you can't pay the entire balance every time - it will cause more trouble than it's worth.

Don't get any credit cards. If you must get one, use it only in an emergency and pay it up right away.
