the legal right to fire (end employment) of a person solely on the basis that they are a gay or lesbian person?

I have a friend who told outright that this was why she was fired (even though they didn't have proof that she was a lesbian...and the fact that she is not a lesbian, she's heterosexual actually). I was wondering if maybe it was religiously based since she worked with very fundamentalist religious people. That's why I asked.

Well, I think it is totally wrong, religiously and morally, to fire someone for that reason.

However, this can be a tricky question when it comes to the legality of it because we must grant freedom of religion. If it is against someone's religion to have a homosexual employee, then should that right be protected? I am always advocating for religious freedom in almost every case I have come to. But here, I would make an exception. One person's religious freedom should not be allowed to take away the freedoms of another person. So if a person said it was against their religion to hire someone who is black, this should not be tolerated. And the same goes, in my mind, for homosexuals. One should not be allowed to fire someone for that.

Furthermore, I'd like to know where in the Bible it says that an employer is not allowed to hire a homosexual? Granted, the Bible does seem to be against homosexual relations. But then does that mean that the fundamentalist employer you are speaking of would also not hire an overeater? Would they insist that all who work for them be a born-again Christian?
It simply shows intolerance in my opinion. They do have a total right to believe that homosexual relations are immoral. But they do not have the right to impose their religious beliefs on others, nor to discriminate.

As someone for limited government, I think that private employers should be able to hire (and fire) any person for any reason, that it is not the government's role to dictate what a private employer can do. So I think it should be legal for a private employer to fire a gay or lesbian person, or a Christian person, or a white person, solely because of those factors. Now I know it's never going to happen in the real world. As a Christian, and someone who opposes homosexuality, I think that an employer should hire and fire people based on how they do their job, and that's it.

I don't think it should be considered in employment situations. Or housing situations, unless it would be a roommate or boarder. I am a Christian, but we are supposed to love everyone above all else, and I feel that firing someone would probably not show them alot of love. Besides, as a Christian business owner, how would I pick which "sinners" I would hire and which I would not? God does not have a ranking system, and all have sinned, so where is that line drawn? Well, for me, it is anyone who has a history of abuse of children, because my empolyees would work with children, but gays actually have very good track records(as a generalization) with kids.

lol, i've been thinking for 5 minutes to find a job to which that could apply to. except maybe heterosexual forms of prostitution i can't image one job that would prefer straight people over gay people.

unfortunately, there are probably a lot of employers who don't feel the same.

the world is a sick place when it comes to the subject of tolerance.

How can you impose spirituality on anyone? Let alone an employer?? Talk to the Dept. of Labor, for your sake!

I think the firing of anyone due to sexual orientation is wrong. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 needs to be updated to protect employees who are homosexual.

homosexuality is an abomanation before God and death is on its way for those who practse it. seek the truth. ask Jesus into your life and be born again by the power of the Gospel (an actual real life event in your real life) if you do this in a prayer sincerely God will answer you!

Well, where I'm from that's not a legal right. It's called "discrimination", and you can sue the employer for it.

That is very (no, Incredibly!) ignorant and narrow minded. Homosexuals should be treated like normal people.

i dont think thats a religious question. i firmly believe that homosexual relationships are wrong, but thats not grounds for firing someone
