i mean, what was wrong with Thor, Zeus, Nemesis, Aether, Apollo, Aphrodite, Ares, Hera, Huitzilopochtli, Jóhonaa’éí, Atum, Ra, Ptah, etc, etc, etc that they didn't make it to be our current God ?
and more importantly: who will we chose to be our next God in a few generations?

Nothing was wrong with them exactly (well, Huitzilopochtli may have been just a bit bloodthirsty), but they suffered the fate of all deities: They were replaced.
As for the current guy, I think he/she/it will be replaced by the Almighty Sign of the Dollar.

The fact is the God of the bible has radically changed from the time he was invented.
If we accept the bible is true (which I don't) and Moses (any other Old Testament character, or Jesus) showed up at any church on earth, he would either kill everyone inside for blasphemy or he would have a heart attack.
But, he wouldn't have a clue what people were doing other than blaspheming God.
Additional comment (I just read the last part, the question):
I agree with Weemaryanne (below), the Almighty Dollar is well on its way to becoming the 21st Century deity, but it might be the Chinese "dollar."

i think the name changes, not much the concept.
although you are right in that we changed from many gods to one god, that was huge.
but still, all those gods are similar. they have unlimited power and act shockingly human, just like god and jesus. they explain where we come from and give us answers to some of life's mysteries.
they give us direction.
moral and spiritual.
i think the god in a few generations will be something we find silly. like worshiping tony the tiger. or Scientology.
after all, the egyptians were shocked when ahkenatan (sp?) replaced their many gods with one, atan the sun disk. they thought it was silly.

God was around long before any of the ones you mentioned. When people change or create a god to meet their needs and ideas it's called idolatry.

That's the beauty of Spirituality. The God of my understanding is not the same God I was introduced to in my childhood. You choose "You're God" I've chosen mine.

As Voltaire said, "Si Dieu nous a fait à son image, nous le lui avons bien rendu." (Which means "If God has made us in has image, we have certainly returned him the favor.") Our image of God is colored by our culture, our family, our personal experiences, our prejudices. God is just God. It is we who are limited in our perception of God.

Not exactly, but pretty much. Weak people need some imaginary friends for support.

We do not choose God. He exists whether we believe in him or not. As for all of the others, They are all mythical 'gods' and do not exist whether we believe in them or not.
