I've lived in Atl. for most of my life...now that I actually live in the city (west end), I've come to the conclusion that its not what I thought a metropolis should be. For one, this is NOT the most pedestrian-friendly town. Modern conveinences such as corner stores, markets, reasonably priced shopping areas, reliable public transport, diverse communities (not just the yuppy black couple down the street), living wages, diverse job markets..just do not exist in this sprawling community. There's very little localization!! Other than the stiffling humidity, and cheaper education, ATL has little to offer. Say you agree!

In reference to the Blacks as racist comment. SO TRUE!! Many blacks have contracted a severe case of Stockholme Syndrome...they feel the only way to combat racism is to become racist themslves!!!

I agree, I have been to ATL a few times, and didn't like it at all. I live in Memphis, and Atlanta is basically a over grown version of Memphis, I don't see what the big fuss is about, it sucked to me. PLUS people in Atlanta don't even really support it's sports teams. I hate all Atlanta teams, only if they're winning do they support.

This is all going to change soon....for the first time in 40 years their have been more construction in the city of atlanta, than any of its suburban counties. It is unbanizing very fast with streetlevel retail coming aswell as many new buildings being built. Trump has even said he is going to build "something big" (at least 2 buildings in midtown, one expected to be 1,100 feet, and 1 in buckhead district) Atlanta had a pop. of almost 500,00 about 50-60 years ago and dropped to 390,00 by 1990. It is expected to be at 440,000 by 2007 and 525,000+ by 2020. The city of Atlanta will finally have a diverse (most of the new construction is designed for all incomes) and localized community where people will not even need a car, they can just jump on an electric trolley (which may be built and completed in the 20's) to get across the city. When the trolleys are finished, that will urge even more buildings to be built inside the city meaning an even higher pop. and localization. Atlantic Station and all the new buildings (with retail) you see beeing built inside the city, in one area is proof of the localization. It may not be much of a metropolis now, but imagine in less than 20 years what Atlanta will be like...

There are a lot worse cities (I lived in ATL for 18 years). Detroit, Houston, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, El paso, Oklahoma City St. Louis are all less appealing, just to name a few.
Better public transport, sidewalks and people moving closer to their jobs would help Atlanta a lot. it has the longest avg commute in the nation.

I have only passed through there and it looked ok. I've heard lot of good things about ATL - mostly businessmen are moving there because it's kind of a hub for most of the US - you can take direct flight to any part of the US. Dont know much about the urban life - i dont the suburbs are supposed to be good - couple of friends have bought houses there

You should move to downtown Chattanooga -- is pretty diverse. I love that town, and you are right, Atlanta sucks. I live in Chicago (have lived in New Orleans & St. Louis), only visited Atlanta, but concluded it was too conjested and sprawling.
Come to Chicago! Several neighborhoods are really diverse. We have our wuppie-buppie neighborhoods but Printers Row, Edgewater, Rogers Park, Uptown, Bucktown, Logan Square are pretty diverse.

No place is perfect. You've got to give back to a community too and make it a better place for someone not just yourself. Too much of society has the "look out for #1" attitude and that's what's deteriorating society as a whole. Trying giving something back and not just taking.
