Too much... for what? If your goal is to die from lung cancer as quickly as possible, then no, 40 cigs/packs a week isn't too much. What is your goal?

The God has given tobacco to mankind for medicinal use but the humans have used it for intoxication. Tobacco even in small quantity consumed is bad for health. For example, when you smoke, the smoke is thrown out by the body and it is an indication that the body can not tolerate its contents. Same way, when tobacco is chewed, the person has to spit many times because the body tells the person that I can not accept it is very difficult to be taken without spitting. Even the animals never ever enter a tobacco field whereas humans have consumes uncounted tons of tobacco since generations. It would be very wise of you to quit and save lots of money and health. Just imagine the bad news your doctor gives you that you have a cancer. Don't allow this to happen. I gave up the bad habit six years ago. I enjoy a very healthy life now.

2 packs a week (40 cigarettes) doesn't seem excessive to me. 40/7= 5 or 6 each day - that doesn't seem too bad.

The problem comes when you are understress and that number increases. Of course, not smoking at all is your best defense against health concerns - I am assuming that is why you ask - but I think 1/2 a pack a day is still considered moderate, while I think 1 pack per day is considered heavy smoking.

I love to smoke and was down to about 3 per day and then gradually increased to nearly a pack a day without even noticing, hardly. If I could keep it to 2 packs a week consistently, I would still be smoking.

When you wake up craving a cigarette or anytime you just crave one it is too much. Your body has already become addicted. If you social smoke, like when you drink or you are at a bar, its not that bad, but still damaging. The best advice any consumption is too much. Scientists understand that smoking causes cancer, so when you smoke you up your chances of getting it. That is why I say one a year is too much.

I smoke like 1 pack every 2 week, but only because I mix the tobacco with a green smelly plant. Im not saying I am doing the right thing, but its what I like to do, so I do it anyway.

Most regular smokers go through a pack of 20 a day, so I'd say 140 a week is about average. If you're smoking 40 cigarettes a week, you're way below average. If you're smoking 40 packs a week, I can't see how you find the time to do anything else, like ask questions on answers.yahoo.com. :-)

Yes, honeygal; SMOKING IS DANGEROUS TO YOUR HEALTH.
My candid advice is that, you should enrol in a smoking-cessation programme. Cigarette smoke contains at least 3 (three) major toxic ingredients- Coal tar, nicotine and Carbon monoxide; as well as at least 200 (Two hundred) other toxic ingredients. These 'block' the blood vessels through occlusion; leading to damage of the vessels.
Remeber, honeygal; smokers are liable to die young. Women smokers have babies who are borm 'small' with a tendency for various complications including brain damage.
If you do not wish to enrol on a smoking cessation programme; go to any Pharmacy Store near you; and, Ask to see the Pharmacist. He or she shall counsel you on smoking cessation; and, shall introduce you to products like Nicorette Patch; a 'plaster' which replaces the cigarette and delivers lower doses of nicotine to your blood stream; or, other tobacco substitutes like the nicotine gum, 'fake cigarettes with nicotine; etc.
I wish you all the best; as I believe you will give it a try.
What you need most is a determination to stop; and, you WILL succeed, honeygirl!

Of course it is (and I suspect you already know that).

So if you REALLY asked this question in order to get encouragement to quit, I'll bet you've come to the right place!

My guess is that 98% of the answers you'll get will tell you what you already know (but may need to hear again)....

QUIT NOW!!!

Any tobacco consumption is too much. But the more you have, the more damage you will do to your body.
