I think it's Thomas Edison. He tried several things - gold, paper, even a hair from an employee's beard - to find a filament for his lightbulb. After almost 10,000 tries, he found tungsten, which is a metal that has very few uses other than as lightbulb filament. Actually I've heard this quote attributed to Edison.
