Death is the sleeplike state of nonexistence. "Hell" is the common grave of mankind, so everyone who dies goes there to await resurrection on the last day.

(Acts 24:15) there is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous

(John 11:24) Martha said to him [Jesus]: “I know he [my brother] will rise in the resurrection on the last day.”

Hell is NOT someplace/something we need to fear; there is no suffering in the grave.

(Ecclesiastes 9:5) For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all

(Ecclesiastes 9:10) there is no work nor devising nor knowledge nor wisdom in Sheol ["hell"]

(Ezekiel 18:4) The soul that is sinning—it itself will die.

The bible says that Hades ("hell") will be done away with:
(Revelation 20:14) And death and Hades were hurled into the lake of fire

Faithful, patient Job requested that he go to "hell":
(Job 14:13) O that in She´ol you would conceal me

Even Jesus was in "hell" for three days:
(Acts 2:27) you will not leave my soul in Hades ["hell"]

that verse of hell being cast into the lake of fire means that right now hell isnt the hellfire place we think of right now.. its just a holding area like how "Abraham's bosom" was a waiting area before Jesus opened the gates of heaven to the OT saints..

Hbr 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

you have to be judged before your eternal destiny is determined.

so when people say theyre burning in hell i dont think theyre actually burning yet.. theyre just awaiting judgment.. i dont think there just sitting around for 2000 years .. i dont comprehend the way time works on the other side.

I see that people say that you go to purgatory, I would like to know where the Bible makes mention of such a place... I have read the Bible many times and I have yet to see anything about a place called purgatory or anything that would make one think that they would float around. this is such complete nonsense!
however the Bible does says (about Christians) "absent from the body is present with the Lord" 2 Corinthians 5 :8
which for the unbeliever would be opening their eyes in hell, I believe that they are in hell for eternity, the lake of fire seems to be reserved for Satan and his angels.

A man is appointed once to die and then judgment. There is no purgatory/limbo and no baptism for the dead either or progressing that's a lie. Like Jesus said to the thief on the cross whom accepted Him as Lord and Savior TODAY! you will be with ME in paradise. Hell is Eternal and Heaven is eternal. Salvation is free we have been given a pardon for our sins for which the wages are death. If you were going to prison and someone gave you a pardon for your crime and said its your choice its up to you. There is no second chance after we die. But you either honestly accept the fact that you are a sinner and Jesus payed the price once and for all (the lamb of God) for our sin by dying on the cross in our place,(passover because we are covered by His blood) or reject it (free will) our choice. It is not complicated it is Love in it purest form. When one is saved they are saved forever no one or powers or principalities can take you from His hand never. Gods promise. Today is the day of salvation for who knows what tomorrow will bring. I've made my decision If I die tonight I know where I will be. Do you?

"It is appointed to man once to die and then the judgement." Hebrews 9:27 I never heard that people were consumed in the lake of fire. Jesus used the same word, everlasting, to describe both the suffering of the damned and the happiness of the saved.

WHAT JESUS SAID ABOUT DEATH

Jesus Christ spoke about the condition of the dead. He did so with regard to Lazarus, a man whom he knew well and who had died. Jesus told his disciples: “Lazarus our friend has gone to rest.” The disciples thought that Jesus meant that Lazarus was resting in sleep, recovering from an illness. They were wrong. Jesus explained: “Lazarus has died.” (John 11:11-14) Notice that Jesus compared death to rest and sleep. Lazarus was neither in heaven nor in a burning hell. He was not meeting angels or ancestors. Lazarus was not being reborn as another human. He was at rest in death, as though in a deep sleep without dreams. Other scriptures also compare death to sleep. For example, when the disciple Stephen was stoned to death, the Bible says that he “fell asleep.” (Acts 7:60) Similarly, the apostle Paul wrote about some in his day who had “fallen asleep” in death.—1 Corinthians 15:6.

The Bible teaches that the dead “are conscious of nothing at all.” They are not alive and have no conscious existence anywhere. The account of Lazarus confirms this. Upon returning to life, did Lazarus thrill people with descriptions of heaven? Or did he terrify them with horrible tales about a burning hell? No. The Bible contains no such words from Lazarus. During the four days that he was dead, he had been “conscious of nothing at all.” (Ecclesiastes 9:5) Lazarus had simply been sleeping in death.—John 11:11.
The account of Lazarus also teaches us that the resurrection is a reality, not a mere myth. Jesus raised Lazarus in front of a crowd of eyewitnesses. Even the religious leaders, who hated Jesus, did not deny this miracle.

Think about this too: If Lazarus had been in heaven for those four days, would he not have said something about it?— And if he had been in heaven, would Jesus have made him come back to earth from that wonderful place?— Of course not!

Yet, many people say that we have a soul, and they say that the soul lives on after the body dies. They say that Lazarus’ soul was alive somewhere. But the Bible does not say that. It says that God made the first man Adam “a living soul.” Gen. 2:7, Adam was a soul. The Bible also says that when Adam sinned, he died. He became a “dead soul,” and he returned to the dust from which he had been made. The Bible also says that all Adam’s offspring inherited sin and death too.

The Scriptural teaching of the resurrection, however, is not compatible with the doctrine of the immortality of the soul. If an immortal soul survived death, no one would need to be resurrected, or brought back to life. Indeed, Martha expressed no thought about an immortal soul that was living on elsewhere after death. She did not believe that Lazarus had already gone to some spirit realm to continue his existence. On the contrary, she showed her faith in God’s purpose to reverse the effects of death. She said: “I know he will rise in the resurrection on the last day.” (John 11:23, 24) Likewise, Lazarus himself related no experiences of some afterlife. There was nothing to report.

Clearly, according to the Bible, the soul dies and the remedy for death is the resurrection.

And now concerning thy question regarding the soul of man and its survival after death. Know thou of a truth that the soul, after its separation from the body, will continue to progress until it attaineth the presence of God, in a state and condition which neither the revolution of ages and centuries, nor the changes and chances of this world, can alter. It will endure as long as the Kingdom of God, His sovereignty, His dominion and power will endure. It will manifest the signs of God and His attributes, and will reveal His loving kindness and bounty. The movement of My Pen is stilled when it attempteth to befittingly describe the loftiness and glory of so exalted a station. The honor with which the Hand of Mercy will invest the soul is such as no tongue can adequately reveal, nor any other earthly agency describe. Blessed is the soul which, at the hour of its separation from the body, is sanctified from the vain imaginings of the peoples of the world. Such a soul liveth and moveth in accordance with the Will of its Creator, and entereth the all-highest Paradise. The Maids of Heaven, inmates of the loftiest mansions, will circle around it, and the Prophets of God and His chosen ones will seek its companionship. With them that soul will freely converse, and will recount unto them that which it hath been made to endure in the path of God, the Lord of all worlds. If any man be told that which hath been ordained for such a soul in the worlds of God, the Lord of the throne on high and of earth below, his whole being will instantly blaze out in his great longing to attain that most exalted, that sanctified and resplendent station.... The nature of the soul after death can never be described, nor is it meet and permissible to reveal its whole character to the eyes of men. The Prophets and Messengers of God have been sent down for the sole purpose of guiding mankind to the  157  straight Path of Truth. The purpose underlying Their revelation hath been to educate all men, that they may, at the hour of death, ascend, in the utmost purity and sanctity and with absolute detachment, to the throne of the Most High.

Ecclesiastes 9:5,6
5 For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all, neither do they anymore have wages, because the remembrance of them has been forgotten. 6 Also, their love and their hate and their jealousy have already perished, and they have no portion anymore to time indefinite in anything that has to be done under the sun.

Luck has nothing to do with it. If they have accepted Jesus Christ as their personal saviour they go to heaven if not they spend eternity in hell. you know that old story?
