Like most Muslim states in the region, Iran is not a stable democracy.
It is a religious state with laws based on the Qu'ran.
As such the destruction of Israel, which they have already stated should be wiped off the map, is of prime importance and justified in their eyes in the Qu'ran.
Russia offered to sell Iran cheap uranium that was suitable for power stations, but not for nuclear weapons. Iran refused...
They have consistently lied about their nuclear ambitions, and tried to hide their activities from the UN nuclear inspectors.
They are financial backers of Hamas, and support the idea of a holy jihad against the West.

All countries that are unstable in their beliefs are a threat not only to the security of the US but to the very existence of mankind. The west and that includes most Protestant and Catholic countries should be aware that Iran will at this present time can call a holy war just because they choose too.In a more Conservative Iran it would be okay.My thing is that they will farm nuclear knowledge to any Islamic country.Including those insurgents in Iraq.Israel took out Saddam Husein's nuclear plant and we should take out Iran's if it gets to that point. If they used chemical weapons on another Islamic nation they wont hesitate to use it on us.

Not any more so than India,Pakistan,China,Israel, etc. etc. etc.
we will all be protected in north America by the "star wars" shield of laser equipped satellites developed by Ronny Ray-gun, and it is NATO policy to shoot first anyhow, It might actually be in the interest of world peace if more little despotic, religiously fanatical nations were to have nuclear weapons, to restore the balance of terror so to speak, maybe the developed nations could just give them some, we seem to have much more than we need for our own use, especially if we "really" do not intend to use them. What I expect is that some lunatic in one of the major nation will get us into another really major war and use the bomb, I think we are at a much higher risk than before, mostly because the bomb has been developed for use as a tactical field weapon, and if one side does that others will follow, Of course we could get lucky and some genius in some war department research facility might be able to wipe every body on the planet out with some form of plague, preventing any damage to buildings and other valuable assets
do you feel better now

The region has one nuclear power now Israel and they act like a bully and destabilize the region. A nuclear armed neighbor would result in an instant nuclear standoff which would look pretty peaceful and stable compared to the current situation.
The leader of Iran is not a crazy fundamentalist. His recent sabre rattling got Europe, Russia and the U.S, to agree to open up trade talks with him. The end result will be jobs which is what he wanted in the first place. He is pretty smart to be able to rattle a sabre he doesn't have and get results.

We are going to have the same record of success in keeping weapons of mass destruction under control that we have had with controlling the flow of drugs. We need to work on developing a multinational strategy on what the major powers will do if a state elects to deploy such a weapon. To prevent their proliferation is impossible.

heck yes it constitutes a threat, gee I seem to remember that they threatened to use a nuclear weapon on their neighbors if they obtained one. I would consider that to be one hell of a threat if I lived near them!!!

Star wars never got fully developed , as of now we have no missile shielding. Any hit on us will be retaliated against 100 fold, mutually assured destruction is the theory.
