It is said to be written by a human(who is unkown and said to be the sleeping subject/contact personality) and who recieved information from spiritual beings. It is said that the papers were materialized between 1925 and 1935 in a manor that was not even understood by them. It was published in 1955 and is said that only the index is written by man (Dr. Sadler).

I heard it was aliens with spelling problems who had a habit of changing their minds and revising it every now & then :)
