My family used to have a labrador, and we sadly departed, it has been over a year, and now we are looking for a new dog. My mom said that any Dog that sheds, we can have AS LONG, as its LESS than a labrador. We are looking for a bigger sized dog, a cocker spaniel is TOO small and a great dane is TOO big. We can give the Dog an hour a day of excersie, and we want a Dog that isn't hyper all the time, we want a faithful couch potato, and a fun excersize companion. Thanks For All Your Advice!!

Try a "Labradoodle" It's not an AKC breed but it is a mix breed with careful selection and intentional mix. It's a Cross b/w a poodle and a labradoor. Poodles dont shed and are somewhat hypo-alergenic but not quite as smart as Labs. Sooo you get a "Labradoodle" These dogs are selected for specific qualites (hair and brains) to be bred later. and others are steralized and not bred if they dont exhibit these certain genetic characteristics.

I wouldnt over rule a great dane either. Although they are large they really dont eat THAT much. They are low energy dogs so they dont require as much food as you would think. I have a Great Dane and it's the best dog I have ever had. She is sweet, very mellow, loves kids, sleeps pretty much most of the day. Infact, they are known to be great house dogs. B/c for some reason when these dogs (the breed as a whole, ask any Dane owner) are outside they are very robust but when they come into the home they calm down. I would definitly do a lot of research on ANY breed of dog that you get to make sure that you want them because shedding shouldnt be the only issue. Example lab's chew like crazy, My dane has never touched anything in the house (outside is a different story but that is only b/c I am gone during the day)

Well, there are only 2 REAL answers to your question: 1) is obviously the mexican hairless, BUT you must know that they do actually have hair, just nowhere near as much as any other dog. also, there are two versions of these hairless dogs: the true hairless, and its littermate, the powderpuff. the powderpuff has a full body of hair so you wouldnt want one of these. or if you want something that actually has hair but DOESNT shed your only other option is 2) a poodle. and since you stated that a cocker is too small and a dane is too big then you will want a standard poodle. theyre very intelligent and wont shed (and you dont have to shave them to keep them from shedding either, as i see one person wrote. they can have long fur and still wont shed). personally i would choose the standard poodle because 1) theyre easier to find, 2) you wont get stared at when you have it outside, 3) theyre MUCH easier to take care of (hairless dogs have to stay out of the sun as much as possible, they get sunburned VERY easily), and 4) theyre easier to be affectionate with. that may sound strange. hope all this helps!

pretty much all dogs shed less than Labs
a standard poodle or Airdale Terrier are the right size, but are slightly more active than you want.. I would get an adult rather than young pup... both are non-shedding
a mutt would probably be your best choice, go to the shelter and look around, Avoid Border Collies, while they shed less they are WAY too active for you
alot of excessive shedding is because of poor food quality (any from grocery store or Wal Mart are crappy foods and will make dog shed more)
honestly for a couch potatoe you want a Shih Tzu, although small they are the couch potatoes..

Just about EVERY dog sheds less than a lab (except maybe a Husky or a Shepherd!)

My all-time favorite mid-sized dog for kids is the English (or Welsh) Springer Spaniel. They require some grooming, but don't shed too much, are generally great with kids and easy to train. Vizslas and Brittany Spaniels are great too, but they need more strenuous exercise.

Irish Setters and English Setters and Golden Retrievers are usually great with kids and shed less - and their hair is longer which is easier to clean up than a Lab's.

Females are a little bit easier than males, but either should make a terrific pet. They will need a good thirty minute run every day.

You'll need an adult dog if you want a couch potato - all puppies are hyper. Some dogs mature earlier than others. Any of the hunting breeds will take longer to "settle down".

Short-haired dogs shed less than longer haired dogs, so look for a short-haired breed. You might try an adult Weimeraner - they are beautiful, they don't shed much, and if you get an adult around 3 years old, are settled. They are wonderful family dogs.

My father is allergic to dogs that shed, but we have a dog. He's a Bichon Frise. They may be smaller than what you're looking for, but they meet all the other requirements! They barely shed, and they're clean dogs. Just be careful because they're white. White dogs are very prone to allergies. My dog is allergic to the pollen in the springtime. Another dog that doesn't shed is a Chihuahua, but they're obviously too small for you. You can consider getting a smaller-sized dog, though. :)

A couch potato that hardly sheds -- a pitbull or American Staffordshire. If you treat it right, it will be the love of your life. Check out the shelters. The downside of these dogs, or course, is the stigma attached to them. You'll have to be a very good dog owner, and treat your dog with lots of love. Then other people will realize that your dog is just a giant marshmellow, like mine!

A Labradoodle. It's a cross-breed of a Labrador and a poodle. It has the same temperment, features and personality as a Lab, but because of the poodle in it, it won't shed much, if at all. Most Labs are docile and lazy, like mine, but the poodle in him will be docile, lazy, and almost fur-free!! Good luck, and I hope you find the perfect dog!! :-)

If you want a breed that is alergy friendly the best dog is a poodle. They come in the very small (toy) to the bigger standard. The standard poodle is around 50-70 pounds. They are very good dogs who exercise, and are not all that hyper. I would recomment that you do research on various breeds by going to:
http://www.akc.org/breeds/index.cfm
That way you can find the best breed for you.

The best dog possible to have between your wanted sizes and that hardly sheds would be a German Shepherd....they are great companions!!!
