Yes. In countries where this is a requirement, the population seems to get on together better, and there are fewer crimes in the 20-age bracket. As well, it's a great place for undecided teens to get some training and some broadening to make decisions about the direction of the rest of their life.

No !!! I am in the military and the last thing I want is more people that do not want to be there. It's bad enough as it is. The only thing that I can say now when someone starts moaning or complaining about actually doing their job is, " hey, you signed up for this, the United States Military is all voluntary," and I hope it stays that way.

Yes, we have become very self centered and divided and fractious
(it's in the dictionary)in this country and I think working with others;
something the draft used to do but that's gone; but maybe not for long, would help bring us back together again, and it needn't be military service

I think that there should be some sort of service to the government. It doesn't have to be military, but could be something else like peace corp or anything else.
Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country......anybody remember that quote?

Some countries do this.

I'm not sure where I fall on this issue.

If they allowed ppl to declare concious objection then maybe yes. If not, then definitely no.
