I started babysitting when I was in 5th grade. My school offered a course on babysitting one Saturday afternoon and taught us all the details from changing diapers to feeding and everything in between from babies to older children as well as minor first aid and CPR. My mom was the neighborhood babysitter when I was younger, so I was also surrounded by it all my young life, so I learned a lot from her too.
The summers between 5th and 6th grade and 6th and 7th grade I made my own fliers and passed them out in the neighborhood to all of the houses I knew had kids and posted one at the neighborhood pool. Most of my families came from referrals and would take me across town at times. From then until my senior year in high school, I was the most wanted babysitter.
Always show your kids the fundamentals and the importance of knowing safety. Its up to the parents to prepare them for the job of babysitting and it prepares them for parenthood in turn. Have your child print up a fact sheet for each familiy they babysit with a list of emergency numbers for the parents to leave as well as any allergies. Include a section for their routine for the time the babysitter is there, dinner and bath etc. There needs to be details should an emergency happen as well as where things are located, circuit breaker and how to turn the power back on should the breaker pop in a storm. I also printed info cards with my information as well as my allergies and my parents contact information for the parents to keep with them should anything happen to me while in their home.

legally there is a law that 12 and older can babysit but what i think... i think that it depends on who it is because some 11 year olds are more mature than 16 years olds.

i think it depends on the person, their experiences, and the child that will be babysat. I was 12 when i started and the first job i had was a 10 month old. I wasnt ready no matter how many classes i took, but that's just me.
