As my mom used to say,you have to sometimes bear the pain of being beautiful. I think this fits your situation.
I would suggest using hot or heated rollers to get a temporary curl and /or wave. Irons are good too for this. Braids will only give you a kinky wave, and most of the time if you have layered hair it will also get poofy. Most likely you will still have to curl the very ends. Mousse only works on hair if you already have natural body in your hair. You can scrunch all you want, but it won't give you what you're looking for.
For a longer lasting curl, body or wave, get a perm. If you want it to look nice and soft though, you'll still find yourself using the iron or the rollers.
I would suggest if you want to look nice and have the curl you're talking about that you just grin and bear the rollers.

Oh. No rollers..or irons. That's hard. Well...you can do it the hard old-fashioned way where you braid your hair into a bunch of braids all the way around your head. Then you can sleep in them and take it out in the morning. Your hair should be pretty wavy/curly.

To make your hair naturally wavy put it in a VERY TIGHT braid right when you are coming out of the shower. Leave the braid in for a day take it out and your hair is wavy! Yes its true I've done it before...just try it...but it won't work if you don't braid it tightly...but only one big braid!

after you get out of the shower put some leave in conditioner in your hair and maybe a little bit of anti frizz creme, comb it through. Then braid your hair really tight and give it about a day to fully dry. Don't use a hair dryer, it will add flyaways. After you take it out, use your fingers to comb through your hair. Don't use a brush because it will make it bushy. That should pretty much do it. Try and not put too many different products on your hair once you take it out, you will lose the waves.

Assuming you mean a temporary change, versus more permanant, try braiding your hair while it is wet and let it dry that way. When you release it, it'll have a great wave to it. And you can control the size of the waves by the size of the braid. Smaller braids, tigher waves. Larger braids, looser waves.

After you get out of the shower let your hair dry naturally. While you are waiting for it to dry scrunch your hair every five minutes. Once your hair has completely dried it will be in loose curls and waves. Just make sure not to brush it when it is done drying.

did you try to braid your hair at night, with just a touch of gel in it, then take out the braids the next day and enjoy your lovely wavey hair that'll last all day long!

you can braid your hair when it is still damp and keep it braided until it is completely dry. use a brus instead of a comb after you let it loose
