Make sure you know all about the highlights first. If your hair is long make sure you get WOVEN highlights (the ones they use the foil for). if they come anywhere near your head with a thing that looks like a swimming cap then tell them to stop. Also, make sure you know exactly what shade to go for. If you want a drastic change then go for light blonde thick highlights. If not, go for more caramel tones with fine highlights.
Also know where you want the highlights. Half a head is from the ears and down to just below the crown at the back. A full head is well... highlights all over, and you can ask for them just on your parting to they'll only show when you have your hair down.
The stylist will know these terms and know what you want. He/she will not straighten your hair unless you ask them to!

When you go to the salon, tell the receptionist there that you are very particular about your hair and you need someone to do exactly what you would like done to your hair. This usually gives you great results when obtaining a stylist, as sometimes one individual specializes more in color, when another is better in her cutting technique. I go across town for my color, but get a cut elsewhere. Or vice versa. If you go in not knowing what you want they are sure to do what they want! Be specific. Good luck!!!

Is there a stylist you usually go to to get your hair cut that you like? Does that person also do coloring or can they recommend someone? I have had issues with stylists not listening to me, and it has made me really angry and frustrated, so I can understand your concern. The best way to get a good stylist is to ask around and see if there's one in your town or city that has a good reputation, or that someone you know swears by. Good luck!

The best way to insure that a stylist does exactly what you want is through threats of violence.
For example, you could hold a gun to the stylist's head and say, "Make one false move and your brains will be decorating that wall".
I do believe in the "carrot and the stick" approach, so after she's done, I recommend giving her a sizeable tip. This way next time you come back, she will be pleased to see you and likely to give you good service once again.

Putting in highlights will require chemicals, and those will dry and damage your hair. You will need to keep it moisturized even more than usual since you use heat to straighten it.
If you don't trust your stylist, do it yourself at home with a kit - they are pretty fool-proof these days, and you control how much is done.

Find people who are happy with their salons, and ask them where they go, and what they ask for. Also, be really clear when you go about what you want. Sometimes they might advise you of something differant, but if they just refuse, or they don't do as you ask, then dispute the bill or walk out. But they are far less likely to damage your hair with chemicals than you will be doing it yourself.
