Many states require uninsured motorist coverage. Even where it's not mandatory, it's usually very cheap. UIM will cover you against hit-and-run drivers as well as the idiots that drive without insurance.

Check your policy. If you have UIM, you're covered. Just file a claim with your insurance company.

If you don't have UIM, then you're on your own as far as repairs are concerned. Sorry.

If all you have is liability, you are not covered for a hit and run. To be covered for that you need collision and uninsured/under insured motorist coverage. If you don't have it you are essentially betting that nothing will happen to your car, or that it won't be worth fixing if it does. I agree you should drop collision on older vehicles that aren't worth repairing, but surely not on those you want to keep. Problem is, if it would cost more to fix than the worth of the vehicle, even with collision the insurance would only give you the worth of the vehicle, not the repair costs.

You need to buy un-insured coverage. That coverage will cover your cost if you're hit by anyone without insurance. Hit and Run would be in this category.

If all that you have is liability then you will have to take care of it yourself. You would need comprehensive insurance to cover this.
