Princess is right and is suggesting the best way to remove a tick. Here is a website that will give even more instruction for you and even suggests a better tool than tweezers, a pair of forceps. But you can still use tweezers of course.

DO NOT TWIST OR BURN! twisting either way has a better chance of breaking the head off in the dog. Burning it before you take it out of the dog will cause the tick to burrow deeper into the dog as it is trying to get away from the heat. Get a firm grip and pull it straight out, then either burn it or put it in alcohol, agian AFTER it is out of the dog.
PS i never saw a tick head kill a dog. If the head ever stays in, it should die and come out of the dog on it's own. Watch the spot though b/c there is a chance of infection, and if there are any signs of infection then call the vet. Otherwise don't worry.

I have found that using Vaseline on the ticks will make them back themselves out. Take a dollop of Vaseline and apply it to the end of the tick that is sticking out. The tick is unable to breathe and will crawl out. then you can destroy the little booger. I have used this method with great success on my black lab/mix. The trick is to stay with your dog while you are doing this because it is within a minute that the tick will crawl out. This way you are sure to get the entire tick and not have to worry about leaving a part of it's head embedded in your dog. Treat wound with an antibiotic ointment like neosporin.

The best and easiest way is to get one of those dog combs or brushes with the very then spikes on them and take your time and comb them out once you honestly believe that you have done a good job of getting them off shampoo your dog down with some hartz flea and tick shampoo and do this about twice and then treat it with some tick ointment for the dogs skin and they also sell tablets for that also which are also great because I have used them on my dogs. Good luck and I hope you succeed!!!

The only way to take out ticks is with a pair of tweezers. If you do it any other way (ie- hot match, nail polish, etc), this will cause the tick to expell its insides into the dog and perhaps subject your dog to lyme disease.
So, to take them out with a pair of tweezers, grab the tick as close to the dog's skin as you can and slowly, but firmly, pull the tick out. Make sure to get all the tick particles out (its mouth, etc).
Good luck. I hate pulling ticks off my dog!

The easiest way I've found is to coat their butts with nail polish. They can't breathe and back out of the skin, and you can pull them off with tweezers. If you don't get the head out, it stays in the skin and can cause infections.
