I agree with you that they are hypocrites. I have always asked about this myself and have never been given a plausible answer. Now I'll keep on eye on your question to see if anyone gives you a knowledgeable response.

School buses have to have seat belts now. if you look they do have seat belts. However the kids dont use them. I never did when i was young because all the seat belts get stepped on, etc and so they are icky and dont want to use a dirty seat belt. Side air bags probably wont hurt the baby. The danger with air bags in the front is that children have been decapitated by the front air bags (meaning their heads were blown off by the impact of the air bags, seriously).

All of the school buses in my area have seat belts...They have for over 10 years. This is the first I've heard of school buses not having seat belts.
About the airbags...I only know that vans (and other autos) must
pass government regulations concerning air bags.

Bus safety is nothing like car safety. Buses do not need to be equipped with seat belts because of a safety design called compartmentalizaton. Buses that weigh more than 10,000 pounds are built to offer "passive restraint" to riders: strong, padded, flexible, closely-spaced seats that protect passengers in the same way an egg carton protects its contents. Cars need seatbelts because there is a great chance of a passenger being thrown out of the vehicle.

It falls under the classic "do as I say , not as I do" functioning of government. For years I have been predicting that there will be a movement to force children in cars to wear helmets and that there still will be no seat belts on school buses, thank you for letting me rant.

Because schools are too cheap to put in belts. belts are only about $30 for 50 at autozone for a van but I have been asking that question for about 3 years now.

Because the school buses originally had seat belts, but the schools took them out because they want you to die when the driver gets in an "accident". That is why there are no seat belts on buses.

A bus driver friend of mine told me once that because in an accident it would be nearly impossible to unbelt each child and get them out safely (esp if there was a fire) so seatbelts are not used. They could be more dangerous in certain circumstance.
Not sure I agree, but that sounds like a good excuse.
