if you want actual slices - rounds- use a mandolin. no it is not a musical instrument.. you can pick up a non professional model for between $15.00 and$30.00 at a kitchenware store. They are somewhat dangerous so follow the instructions carefully. They can do some really neat things like waffle cuts and Julienne cuts.

It depends on the use.

Your best tool is a vegetable or prep knife, a 5" or 7" blade. Brand of the blade really doesn't matter unless you intend to do some serious cooking or have some enthusiasm for cooking. A 5" santoku blade would be best for sharpness and ease of use, but it is not necessary. I like the santoku for its ability to leave what is chopped on the board instead of sticking to the blade. You don't have to use a santoku blade.

If you want to thinly slice onions to put onto hamburgers or as decoration, you should definitely use a knife.

An automatic or manual food prep tool specifically designed to chop onions might not be the best for any use, and this depends heavily on how far apart the blades are spaced and how finely you need your onions chopped. It might be okay if you're making salsa, for example, but not if you intend to use the onions in French onion soup, a casserole dish, or for deep frying onion rings.

Besides, most onions are cheap. You could always practice slicing on a few of them to get the desired cuts.

The Papmered Chef has a slicer thingy. I can't remember what it's called, but it's flat. You put one end on the counter and hold it at an angle. It has an interchangable blade and a holder for the food that you're cutting so that you don't cut you fingers. You can slice anything into a bowl or onto a plate. It's fast, and you don't even have to touch the onions.

I love my food processor. It has a slicing blade that makes the onions very thin, and it's easy - your eyes don't water very much. I would never make French onion soup without it, and it is pretty much the only thing I use it for.

They have a chopper on tv. You put the onion or fruit or whatever on it and then push this closey thing down and it cuts it.
