Many mental illnesses run in families, suggesting that the illnesses may be passed on from parents to children through genes. Genes contain instructions for the function of each cell in the body and are responsible for how we look, act and think.
But, just because your mother or father may have a mental illness doesn't mean you will have one. Hereditary just means that you are more likely to get the condition than if you didn't have an affected family member.
Experts believe that many mental conditions are linked to problems in multiple genes -- not just one, as with many diseases -- which is why a person inherits a susceptibility to a mental disorder, but doesn't always develop the condition.
The disorder itself occurs from the interaction of these genes and other factors -- such as psychological trauma and environmental stressors -- which can influence, or trigger, the illness in a person who has inherited a susceptibility to it.
Unfortunately, most mental illnesses are caused by a combination of factors and cannot be prevented.

Depends on whether or not it is genetic. Also if this is a figurative question, then no. Most people say their mother has mental issues just because they don't understand their mother. Bi-polar is genetic. It doesn't necessarily mean you'll get it. But there is a chance. My mother is the only one out of four other daughters who inherited it from her father. My sister so far shows no sign of it- I do though. Just look up whatever she has, and be aware of the symptoms for it. Keep a diary to track any symptoms you may have, just in case.

Not necessarily; some mental health problems are heredity, but that does not mean that every child, grandchild, great-grandchild will develop a certain condition.
Other mental health problems are caused by some tramatic event, and probably would not be passed along to anyone at all. No matter what type of problem she has, there are medicines and therapeutic approaches that can keep it under control. So, be happy and don't worry about it so much. :)

I am aware of a family where a lady did have mental problems. The ensuing generation did not, to my knowledge; however, mental problems did show up a generation later in another branch of the family. I have never heard of mental problems being experienced by a parent and his/her child.

Not necessarily. The incidence of Schizophrenia is about one percent in the general population and about 20 percent among people with a direct relative who has it. So yeah- your odds are better if your mom has it. As for me, I'm bipolar, my mom is bipolar, and her mom is bipolar. It's partially a question of nature vs. nurture. Am I bipolar because of these genes or did being raised by a bipolar lady drive me to it? Who knows. Still, it's not a guaranteed thing. I have 3 siblings who are all mentally healthy, so you could be fine.

Not most likely, but you may have a tendency to inherit some of those genes. Hopefully you have learned from her, and do not have the same genetic abnomralities that she had!! Good luck to you.....

I wouldn't say you would definitely have it but you would be predisposed to the condition giving you a higher chance of having it than someone in the general population.

Certain diseases like depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia can run in families, but you won't necessarily have any of them.
