And to whom does it belong; anyways?

Palestine referred to the area that's now the countries of Jordan, Israel, plus parts of Lebanon and Syria. The British carved off about 80% of Palestine to create Jordan in 1922.

In 1948 The UN voted to partition the remainder of Palestine, west of the Jordan River, into another Arab state plus a tiny Jewish state.

The Arabs rejected any Jewish self-governance but their subsequent attempts at "finishing Hitler's work" as they called it have all failed.

In the 1970s the stateless Arabs of the disputed territories, kept that way by the Arab world and the UN, adopted the identity of "Palestinian". Today, folks who are anti-Israel call the disputed territories of Judea/Samaria (aka the West Bank) and Gaza "Palestine" in attempt to create a false impression of the situation in people's minds... After all, doesn't "Palestine" belong to "Palestinians"?

The goal of destroying Israel continues today in many forms ... as both a physical and psychological war.

To Muslims, it is Palestine, a place of great importance to the Islamic faith. Legally, I understand that it is Israel, as Israel were awarded the land following a war.
Israel does not recognise Palestine as a state.

Without a doubt, I believe your question has validity. But with that said, it will be necessary to check into my archives of linguist thoughts on this particular subject matter, to ascertain as to the best and most beneficial response scheme possible. Although the question has some important thoughts and validity, I would advise you to seek a professional who can best serve you, since most of the people, who answer questions are good at cutting and pasting, spreading descent, and peddling gloom. Although I will do my best to be forthright in giving you the best answer possible, I am afraid anything that I write would be taken entirely out of context. For this reason, and this reason alone, I will say there are always good answers; but rarely are there perfect answers. So my answer can not and will not serve your needs for anything medical or evangelical. I will only answer by saying this is my best sentiment for which I have actually put my best foot forward to be able to reach a solution to your question that is embedded with perplexing thoughts; it in no way reflects my moral values or any opinion of my business, that will remain incognito.

Israel is the name chosen by God for Prophet Jacob, grandson of Abraham. Abraham originally came from Mesopotamia (now Iraq), and settled in this land. According to the Bible, Jacob saw in a dream that God gave him this land. His offspring, the Israelites, much of whom became Jews later in the time of Moses, claim that this land is their's and so called it Israel.
When Abaraham came to this land, there were other people living around, including the Philistines. It seems there were some hostilities between the Israelites and Philistines later.

The situation now is that Jews call this land Israel. Although they were scattered in many lands in their Diaspora, and come now from different ethnicities, they still claim that they are one nation: the nation of Israel. The Arabs who lived in this land for centuries claim that they were the people of the land. The Arabic name "Falastin" (Palestine) which is derived from Philistine is not Arabic. Arabs used to call this area by the old name of Jerusalem, "Bayt al-Maqdes". In recent history, the name Falastin was adapted and Jerusalem became to be known as al-Quds.

I think historical claims made by both sides are irrelevant to the current facts. The Israeli government realizes that, and through ways adapted from the Zionist movement, it takes advantage of its occupation of Arab lands to change the facts on the land. The Palestinians are divided between peace and war, and don't have strong leadership to help them. Many of them live now a diaspora in many countries of the world. They are known as Palestinians, although they may not have ever seen Palestine in their lives.

Israel or Palestine? I don't know. All I know is that Israelis and Palestinians are humans. For them, living a normal life is more important than what names you give this piece of land.
