Q: How much does gastric bypass cost?

A: This varies according to where you are having the procedure. In doing a little price comparison on the Web, I found that it usually runs between $17,000 and $22,000 dollars.

Keep in mind that the cost of an operation depends on the coverage that you have. For example, one well publicized case of a man whose son (3yrs old) died of cancer and who had no insurance, was billed $186,000 for a lengthy stay. The man told the hospital that he would pay them $600.00 per month. The hospital balked at the offer and sued the man. The judge was outraged. After investigating the case, he lowered the man's bill to 68,000. The man agreed, once again, to pay the $600.00 per month. This time the hospital accepted and took the money like the thieves that they are.

Why do I say this? The judge had determined that if the man had Medicare, Medicaid, or cheap insurance, the entire hospital bill would have been 36,500. The judge determined that even that amount let the hospital turn a profit, even though the Medicare/Medicaid payments would have been next to nothing (in this case).

The judge determined that the hospital was overcharging people with no insurance and using that money to subsidize the insured patients bills.

Sometimes, its not what the operation costs, but rather what type of insurance that you have.

Since you have no insurance, you need to check with local agencies, federal, state and local to see if there is any aid available. If you don't own property, go to a hospital that is publicly funded. These days, almost all hospitals are. Meet with the financial office to see if you can come to an agreement on a lower price. Believe it or not, this happens more than you think. Its worth a shot. But first, exhaust all help available on the web in your area.

Try going to www.ask.com and type in a question, "How can I get help paying for my medical bills?" See what comes up. Then do some Google research on the ramifications of not paying the bill or not paying the bill in its entirety.

But look around, investigate and plan for this. Most people end up in bad situations because of inadequate or no planning.

Good luck to you.

Insurance should cover both gastric bypass and lap band procedures for qualifying candidates - however it's unclear about additional surgery. You denfinitely want to have that clarified. I've heard some cases where individuals who've had gastric bypass, could not get their insurance to cover the expense for the excess skin removal (due to the rapid weight loss) because that procedure was considered cosmetic.

My mom's gastric bypass was around 15 -20 grand. But, her insurance covered it. Talk to you dr. and see what the option are. Your dr, has to approve that kind of surgery, and with you not having any medical insurance, I'm not sure they would be able to do that type of surgery. You need to check online to see about getting medical insurance, or if you are employed check to see if they have medical insurance that you can get thru your work.

before using all that money for gastric bypass...how bout trying more conventional ways of losing the lard...like dieting and exercise...find one that works and stick to it...seen a lot of fat folks who opt for a gastric bypass simply because they're too damn lazy to work something so elementary and counting calories, finding a diet(one suggested by your own doctor) and finding some means of exercise routine....even some really fantastic sweaty sex will knock off some poundage...but find something that works without going the easy route of bypass....have also seen some folks who have had the bypass and within a year or so go right back to obesity simply because they did not opt to change their lifestyle after the surgery when they couldve saved themselves a "ton" of money by doing that in the first place

If your doctor recommends that this procedure needs to be done then tell your doctor that you are unable to afford it and ask him/her about different organizations that offer free medical help to those who need this done but can't afford to pay for it and have no insurance at all.
Contact Social Services to see if they too might be able to help you get this procedure done.
If your doctor wants you to have this done then there is a reason for it and it could be serious so seek out different avenues to see about getting free help.
I commend you for asking about this and for not just letting it slide, your health is very important so please start asking now, okay. Check to see if there is a Free clinic in or around your area so see if they will cover this for you but remember to have a doctors referral with you or something from your doctor stating this needs to be done.
Best of luck to you.

Don't do it!!! It is way to expensive, dangerous and will make you feel terrible for a very long time! You are over-eating. Join over-eater's anonymous and work on self control. Keep a food journal where you write down every single thing you eat or drink on a 3 by 5 note pad. You need to get motivated. Do it without that crazy crazy surgery! Good luck!

Gastric Bypass Surgery/gastrectomy/lapband (all types of weight loss surgery) is very cheap in India. There is one company that is very famous in India that arranges obesity surgery for foreigners in India. They are called the Forerunners Healthcare.I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and about their patient stories.

I have also read that they arrange financing for american and canadian patients as obesity surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. The cost savings are incredible. As a doctor i personally believe that your lobesity surgery can be easily handled in India as the quality of healthcare available here is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.
