DC does get hot in the summer, and very humid. It's basically built on a swamp right next to the Potomac. But there are plenty of indoor things, and the weather is never that bad.

The Air and Space Museum is great for kids. Lots of hands on exhibits - planes, the moon rock.
The Monuments are great for kids, too - especially the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials, and Washington Monument.
The top of the Washington Monument is awesome, but you have to get there early to get tickets for the elevator.

Contact your member of Congress or Senator. They can help you with tickets for special tours.

It can get pretty hot and sticky here in the summertime (just like pretty much anywhere on the East Coast) but when it's brutal out, the city opens up "Cooling Stations" which are either public-access areas in city government buildings, or outdoor tented areas. You can get some air conditioning, ice and water in the cooling stations and sit and relax a bit. These are only open on days when it's really hot out but they open them near all the major tourist areas, so if you find yourself wilting, you can get relief easily.

an 11-year-old would have a good time in DC--- lots of museums, galleries, and other things to do that are both educational and fun.

It can be hot in the summer and humid. But it is a good destination. Most of hte museums on the mall/part of the smithsonian are free. Good tours to places like Arlington Cemetary. Easy to get around b/c of the metro. It's a CLEAN city when you are near capitol hill. Outdoor activities like Nats/United.

Grew up in nearby Maryland. Going back for visit in July. It CAN be warm and humid (upper 80s lower 90s with heat index in 90s, or it can be in the 70s). You will not have enough time to see all there is to see, depending on age and interest. Smithsomian Institutions (many subject areas such as technology, nature, space, etc), National Archives (declarartion, constution, proclamation, etc), monuments galore. You could spend a year and not see it all.

While Washington DC is a bit hot and humid, there are so many things to see indoors. That's a great trip.

Yes, there are so many things to do and see. Very educational for any age. Stay as close in as you can, as parking can be tough, and you do have to do a lot of walking to see everything!
