A gift certificate from a day spa where she can get a massage, a manicure and a pedicure, and a facial. I am 50 like your mom, and I got several of these gifts from friends of mine on my big day last November. I appreciated them so much more than the other gifts I had gotten (although they were nice, but how many pairs of earrings and purses do I need, honestly!?). Why? Because they allowed me to pamper myself for a day. I got a chance to rest and recharge my battery. I felt like a million bucks!
You can get a gift certificate that is open ended, meaning that she can pick the date and time herself (though she will have to call to make all the appointments) OR you can schedule the date and time for her with the Spa's manager, which is nicer.
She'll love it and you for it. And get her a nice card and some flowers, too - 50 is a BIG birthday and can be challenging for women, so make it special for her.

first if she collects things go with that
if you want to make something i suggest a scrapbook of her with different relatives having fun
she probably has everything so a gift card from a fav store
prepare her dinner or take her out for dinner
whatever you do include a nice card shell keep it forever good luck

A gift certificate to one of her favorite resturants, shopping mall, department store or for a pedicure, manicure or new hair cut, etc.
I have an aunt who is impossible to buy for, we had a party yesterday and she got mostly gift certificates and money...she was very happy!

A card, a home made present.
Or just throw her a small party with the family and have a barbeque.
Just let her know she's special on her Birthday.
That's all I ever ask for.

a trip, like a cruise if you could afford it. If not I like the idea of a trip to the spa. Dinner out? If you are broke, throw her a surprise party, get everyone to bring something.
