My little orange cat is so distinctively marked with the lines on her face, white paws, etc. I've seen other cats that look just like her and am going to breed her with a tom that has the same markings. Is this a breed or only a common coloring pattern?

Orange Cats are just a color- not a breed. Most shelters will have anywhere from 10 - 25 percent orange cats, some with markings very similiar to yours. So color-wise your orange cat is nothing special (but personality wise, I bet she's the most special cat in the world).

Please don't breed your cat. You are just adding to the large cat population, and if you get her fixed, she will live longer, be healthier, also, you won't have to find homes for the kittens.

Take a look at this website: http://www.animalhumanesociety.org//news_cat_dilemma.asp.

Notice the picture on the right? Those are all kittens that were given up by people who didn't get thier cat fixed. There are too many kittens, and many of them get put down because there just isn't enough room to house them all.

These are common markings within the tabby family. The color is known as Orange Marmalade. By breeding two of similare markings, the color stands a chance of coming out in the kittens, but you have an equal chance of getting a black and grey tabby (or God only knows what else ... after all, who knows what the tom has in his background).

A few years ago my orange & white cat (Sampson) died from old age. Loved that cat. I was told by quite a few people that orange cats are predominantly males. I'm not sure how true that is, but most orange cats I've seen were, in fact, males. But I don't think they are a separate breed. I have never seen an "orange" breed in the cat shows/competitions I've watched on TV.

I think it's just a common coloring pattern, it has to do with the way the genes are expressed, sometimes the gene that makes orange fur is on, sometimes it's off, and as a result, you have orange fur here and there, but not everywhere.
