I have to assume that something is working to provide you with a picture otherwise you would not be able to do anything with your computer.
If you can see what the computer is doing then I suggest you download this program and run it on your computer. You may have to get it from another source if you can't use your computer for downloading.
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
The program Belarc advisor is free and when run will give you a report all about your computer. From the identity of the mother board to what programs you have.
Using that information enter the motherboard details in the search option in yahoo and you should get details of what drivers are available for your computer.
Using the wrong vga driver should not harm the computer unless you burn it into the bios, but it may make your picture too difficult to make out and then you will have problems reversing things.
Good luck

do you know the make and model for the motherboard? if so you should be able to download the drivers online. Otherwise just keep trying drivers until you find one that works. generic VGA drivers work in most cases. No driver from a good source will damage your hardware, but you might not be able to see the screen proplerly in some cases. WIndows reverts to the old driver after a short while if you dont click on in the box

The graphics software is to run your video drivers, they have some impact on performace, but with an old PC, you won't see much difference. If you go to Download.com or Limewire, you should be able to get any drivers you need, however, video drivers can be found in your operating system software ie, reload Windows and it should work ok. If it doesn't, reformat the drive and load Windows in and everything should work fine.

why you just download the driver from the site of your graphics manufacturer unless the card was built into your motherboard but this shouldn't be a problem seeing as the driver should be on the site of the motherboard manufacturer
you can't corrupt your motherboard its hardware, only software can be corrupted because it can be change hardware can be changed.

sorry, you cant,in fact ,you will probaly do more damage trying to put incompatible software on your laptop than just leaving it,and letting xp sort out the vga problem, although you may be restricted to 800x600,but its better than nothing and at least you can see a display to sort out the driver problem
firstly right click>mycomputer>properties>settings>you will
then see (just above the resolution bar the name of your video card and the name of your monitor(normally "plug and play monitor")and next to it your video card
to the right of the window you will see "advanced",click it and go to adapter tab,and then click properties
then you need to "update driver",first let windows find it automatically, and if asked let windows connect to the net
if you have no luck this way ,then you must go to your video cards website and look for driver downloads,to get the up-to-date drivers and firmware
good luck

You really need to find your original disc or find out what make of card is to download drivers. By just putting any old drivers in really is going to screw up your system. Don't do it.

The best card u can get is 8800GTX version from Nvidia get EVGA or Foxconn make cards. or u can also get XFX or ASUS they have the best CARD. if u want still better (or may be the worst) u can wait till MAY. bcoz ATI(now AMD) is going to launch x2800 or maybe directly x2900. but if u cant wait then go for 8800GTX or in just week time there will be 8950x2 or 8900 card from NVIDIA. this all CARDs support DX10 and OpenGL 2.
