how often do you bleach your cat's litter box? once a month?
when i do it seems to help my cat go better and they look happier with a super clean box..

you dump it out
rinse really good
put bleach in a spray bottle
spray inside fill with warm water
dump it out rinse again
dry with clean paper towels
you rinse well first to get the urine sediments off the sides and bottom
let it soak after you fill it up after spraying bleach[ or use cloth] sponge with handle
rinsing very well helps..
never just dump bleach into the litter box...
the box gets a sticky yellow scum on it no matter how well you clean because the cat does spray urine inside...

The reason they go better is because it is clean and not filled with cat doodie. I have 3 cats and we bleach ours about once a month too. If you keep it clean every day they will not have any accidents in your house. Especially if you have a male cat...they are picky about their litter boxes being clean.

We have four indoors cats and one stray on the mend from an ailment.

Litterboxes are scooped three times a day (morning, prior to dinner and just before bed) to promote use over maybe a rug, carpeting, or other household objects. The more you have, the more important it is to tend to them.

Litterbox cleanings are like most other things - K.I.S.S. We wash with general dishwashing detergents watching any wierd scents. We then spray the boxes down with a mixture of 1:1 vinegar and water using a fine misting spray bottle. We let them air dry or dry in the sun on the weekends. Refill as needed or change the litter at regular intervals.

If you have a cat that is determined to urinate on the inside lid of a covered box, you might use a 3 part (1:1:1) solution of clear unscented ammonia, 91% isopropyl alcohol, and distilled water. We use this to spot clean the inside of the lid and around the box if someone has an accident or does clean themselves well enough. The lid is allowed to fully dry so the 'fumes' folks have mentioned aren't bad. If it were problematic for the cats, our four wouldn't continue to use this box so... YMMV. Each cat and household is different.

If we have an illness in the household, we have used a mixture of bleach and water, but most often I refrain from the use of bleach. I have a virucide/antibacterial solution we use sparingly say every few months for the regular cleanings.

You might ask where we get the supplies so I will include that.

Clear ammonia [≥ 32oz] Sams or WalMart
91% isopropyl alcohol [≥ 32oz] Sams or WalMart
Distilled water - ≥ 1 or 3 gallon - Sams or WalMart
Virucide/Antibacterical solution - Pursue - Amway or Quixtar

Hope this helps.

Yes, like you said rinse it first.I do this every time I change the litter; once a week. I use the following recipe and directions found in an e-book sorry I lost the link for it.

LITTER BOX CLEANER AND DISINFECTANT
1 tablespoon liquid hand soap or scented liquid castile soap
1 tablespoon chlorine bleach
1 1/2 cups water
Add soap and bleach to a 1-pint plastic spray bottle.
Add water and shake.
Spray the empty, rinsed box thoroughly and let it sit for 2 minutes.
Rinse, dry, and refill with litter.

ABSOLUTELY DO NOT USE BLEACH if the box has urine residue in it. The ammonia from the urine and the bleach willl make extremely toxic fumes. I made this mistake once and almost passed out. However, if the box is relatively clean (already been washed), I can see no harm in bleaching it, especially to kill germs. The smell of the bleach will go away. I would use bleach diluted with water because I don't think concentrated bleach on any material is very good.

Hi. It depends; do so extremely lightly and rinse heavily. Also, never clean with ammonia when u have pets because it smells like urine. U don't want 2 have P-Wars in your home. Take care.

I don't bleach. After cleaning I rinse it out with vinegar. It neutralizes the pee smell. I usually do this twice a month.

um...i thought the bleach and ammonia can create dangerous fumes.....i usually scoop the box daily, and then once a week dump, spray out pan, clean with multi-purpose cleaner...whatever scent i purchased that week...rinse, and dry, and refill with fresh litter.

I use litter liners and buy a new litter box ever 3-6 months---the plastic ones are cheap

No. I use liter liners with a drawstring. Put it over the box, put in the liter and when it's time to change, just pull the drawstings up and tie together, put in trash. No messy, smelly box!
