actually, anything that you take into or put on your body for medical, recreational or psycological reasons. Even foods can be considered as drugs if they are being used for medicinal reasons like they are in many naturopathic treatments and folk remedies. Natural medicine uaes many plants and herbs as drugs, not all of them are mild and many of them are not harmless. Standard medicine also uses many proucts from natural sources, just more refined and in a form that allows for more control over dosage levels and potency.
Drugs like coffee are in common use as a stimulating beverage even though the side effects of over indulgence are fairly noticible, but the chemical, caffiene is also extracted and used in medicine, as a stimulant in nondrowsy cold medicnes and pain pills.
And then there are all of the recreational drugs, which run from alcohol through various plant and animal products and into all sorts of strange designer drugs.
Any and all drugs carry some risk, but the designer drugs tend to be the worst. There is really no way to know what you are getting for your money, the drugs are often mixed with other chemicals that are cheaper to get for the sake of profits, and lets face fact that there is no way to set or to enforce standards for purity or truth in advertising if you are using illegal drugs.about the only thing that can be said about street drugs that is in any way positive is that they have never been tested on animals, and while that might please your local animal rights people it is of little reasurance to me.

The term "drug" is currently used for what we used to call "illegal drug," to distinguish it from something a doctor prescribed. Now the term for the doctor's prescription is more often "medication." It means something which is taken which is not food or a vitamin and which has an effect on the condition of the body or the mind.
