beba_pr's answer looks good, but I just wanted to add to it. You need to make sure that your num lock is ON (light on!) and you use the keypad on the right. I don't think it works if you use the numbers above the letters.
Another way to do it is to go into MS word, go to insert, insert symbol, and then choose the character you want...but that's tedious. With a couple of weeks of practice you will have memorized the three-digit codes for the letters and they'll become second-nature to you.

Here's what you do, good buddy... On a windows 2000 or XP system, you go to control panel, and in there, you go to the "Regional and Language Options" applet. Then under the "Languages" tab, click the "Details..." button. From there you click "Add..." Add a "English" and your english variety (office uses this when your are typing, etc, to know which dictionary to use as default) and "United States-International" as the keyboard layout. Click ok, and then you can make this your default keyboard or change it later. The CTRL + ALT key combination will open up the door to many more symbols - try it using CTRL + ATL + /, for example. Also typing the apostrofe plus a vowel will give you the Spanish (as opposed to French) accent mark. ' + a = á.

PC: Hit ALT plus Apostrophe and then the vowel you want the accent on. I think it's ALT SHIFT Tilda and then N to get an enya (ñ).
MACS: Option plus E and then the letter you want the accent on. Option plus N and then N again in order to get the enya.
