I'm about to turn 50. (a very young 50--)
Anyway, 2 months ago, I went to the doctor... hired the trainer... have been exercising and watching what I eat...
and tomorrow, I get measured for the first time. This weekend, I've been eating out of control.

Your thoughts are appreciated!!

I feel your pain. I'm 48. put away the chips and salsa and take a few minutes to look around....
Do you really want to look like some of the other people our age that are out there? Here's what did it for me....There are these two woman at work that are my age. One is thin, fit and nice looking. She has lots of friends and is very smart. She's always going someplace fun and learning something new.
The other is a huge cow. She's always bit*hing about how her back hurts and her feet hurt and she has a headache and she smells like chicken fat. I figure that at this age it can go either way. I pick happy and fun filled over sad and in pain. I keep a mental picture of the cow in my head to remember why I'm not eating a container of ice cream.
I also have a sister your age that is having all kinds of trouble with osteoporosis. Eat right and walk or be a bent over, fat, sad, old person. Do you really want that? You're going to have another birthday one way or another. Go into the next year with some energy to enjoy it!

All weight issues originate at the mind level and then go on to become physical. Up until this weekend, you may have been doing all the right things for your physical body but if you haven't been considering the underlying thought processes that have brought you to where you are, that would certainly explain the sudden loss of control. Weight loss and getting fit is much, much more than just a physical process. You must also get in touch with the thoughts and emotions that have thus far produced the outer conditions that you are attempting to change.

Your subject line is a very good place to start with this inner work. Why *are* you your own worst enemy? Why, when things are going well, do you sabotage your efforts? I know this could be a tall order, and often it is easier said than done, but begin by getting to the heart of that and you will find that working with your body becomes easier.

Today is a new day!! It's hard to change life-long habits and 50 is an awakening experience, isn't it?

Don't expect miracles. Just modify your behavior. When you fall off of the wagon, get back on asap. Find an activity or hobby to do when you feel yourself starting to pig out. Substitute that "good" behavior for the "bad" and soon, you'll have control over the overeating. You can also plan for these events ahead of time. Keep some veggies and low-cal dip handy, or have a yogurt, or something nutritious. Your exercise routine might become something you hate; so, perhaps a leisurely routine would be better. Walking a few miles, or biking maybe?? You might want to include a friend. Stick to something you really enjoy. Moderate exercise is just as good for you as a 2 hr. workout. At at middle age, you don't want to injure your body. Hydrate significantly! Lay off of the junk and salt; and include whole grains, fresh fruits and veggies in your diet. You're stressing yourself out here!!! That is not good for anyone. God Bless!

I think we both know that what you need is not an issue of food but of security. There is no reason to worry about the measurement of tomorrow...they are only numbers and numbers have no power. The real question is how do you feel in the last 2 months...I am going to guess that up untill a few days ago you were feeling great and had a bit of an esttem boost, right? Well, these are the things to worry about, screw the numbers and put down that food!! lol Best wishes

Be your own trainer and nutritionist, the basic rules to losing weight are no soda, no fast food, lots of chicken, fish, fresh (not canned that’s bad) fruits and vegies, whole wheat stuff, yogurt. Not so many cakes and donuts and cookies. Basic common sense for eating, you just need to enforce it. Get all the bad stuff out of the house right away, just toss it or give it away while your still motivated. No alcohol if that applies. Some juice but make sure its all natural, because the ones that aren't are loaded with sugar and a leading cause in diabetes in children and adults. Lots of water, 3-4 liters a day, not all at once, but spread out. Its really easy to down a liter or two while your watching tv or on the computer. Also drink some after you eat the bigger meals of the day, it helps your body pick out the nutrients in food when your food is more spread apart. You also need to stay away from any sports drinks unless you’ve just had a long workout and then you need to limit yourself. Most atheletes mix Gatorade with water because its two complex for your body to get all the nutrients out of. It needs to be diluted. These rules may be hard to adapt to at first so start with cutting out the things you know you can live without. Then work from there. Remember these are perfect eating habits, it can take you a while to work into it. If you know you can’t live without your one treat a day, don’t fight it by trying to eat something else, just eat it and make sure that’s the only one you cheat on a day. Otherwise you’ll get depressed and quit. Another important point is getting the right amount of sleep every night. You need 8-9 hours of sleep each night for your body to function correctly. This is an important factor of losing weight. Set up a routine for yourself and go to bed at about the same time each night.
As for exercise, lots of cardio. Find something you like. If you have never exercised much before, start with walking 30 minutes a day at a brisk pace. Move on to different terrains that include hills and increase the time spent. After a week or two, try jogging the route. No matter what find an activity you enjoy. Walking to jogging is just an example, try hiking, rollerblading, biking. Once you get into a regular routine, if your not happy with the level of difficulty, try signing up with a gym. Spinning, pilates or kickboxing classes are great. It will also introduce you to working with weights. Talk to a trainer for instruction before using any weights. A cheap investment is a balance ball, it works you stomach while your just sitting on it, like at your computer and its great for posture. First of all, good for you!! Excercise is so important to our mental and physical health! You are taking some really positive steps!
Sometimes we have days where we just wnat to eat and not stick to being good! It's ok. I don't think one day will take away from all that you have done so far! Just excercise more and keep doing the best you can! We are all a work in progress! At least I am every day! The key is picking yourself up and continuing to try and not just stopping or giving up all together!
I wish you luck at the doctor's tomorrow. I know you'll see some results! Keep taking care of you! You will feel so mcuh better!

Habit is everything. If you can just somehow find the motivation to get into the habit of exercising regularly and eating sensibly, then it'll become natural, it'll just be what you do. Once you let the habit slip, though, it'll be just as hard to get back into it. I suggest that you put more emphasis on exercise (of whatever kind--it doesn't have to be too strenuous) than on maintaining a strict diet. Just try to eat sensibly, not perfectly! Moderation is key! And try to exercise a little every day. Don't be too harsh on yourself. It is a struggle, it doesn't end, but the results are worth it! Good luck!

WENT TO THE DR. AND HIRED A TRAINER, loosing weight, and reforming you eating habits are ALL ABOUT your inner voice, your desire, your determination, to succeed, you must look with in your own heart, because there lies the REAL answer to the question, can i get my weight down, can I quit smoking, will I be faith full, AND MY DEAR, If you look real hard right now, you will see the answer, It's been in there all this time, good luck Hun

Don't beat yourself up, You're only human like the rest of us!
You need to eat to live! and Certain foods you crave may contain elements your body is needing at that moment, find "good" foods that are rich in the element the"bad" foods contain, unless it's fat of course!
If you're living to eat like me ... have an accountability partner if available, hold each other accountable for your diets. Maybe your trainer won't mind doing that, ring them up to ask!
