I am always wary of 'experts'. I went to see a therapist a few years ago who was sitting there getting all her information from a variety of text books she had on her desk. She became quite annoyed with me because I didn't fit the mould she was trying to pigeon hole me into.
What I will say is that when I first went to my doctor many years ago when I had no idea what was happening to me but I knew it wasn't nice, he handled the situation with a great deal of compassion and care, made me very awasre that what I had was known as depression and that it wasn't my fault. That it was an illness and it could be treated the same as any illness.
I know that had he handled it any other way there was a great likelihood I wouldn't be here now because I was plummeting fast. I consider he has a very good understanding of mental health problems and even though he is not a psychiatrist or a psychologist, I think he is an expert in recognising the signs and of knowing exactly how to handle someone who is at rock bottom.
Experts might have certificates on their walls and possibly many of them are experienced at dealing with mental health patients, and know what meds to prescribe and what therapies to offer, but a lot of them lack personal insight into how the patient feels and that to me is a very necessary tool to have.

i dont considor anyone to be an expert in mental illness! not even psychologists.

what do they know? theyve never been there. they were rich kids, probably good looking, who have floated through life without really ever having tasted the bitter parts of life. ...thats the last person i want giving me advice.

The correct professional you are looking for is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist. For medications used to treat mental illness, it's a psychiatrist.

Well, if you're talking about who you be able to help you more with mental illness, I would say family, friends a spiritual adviser of some sort. I you wondering who might know more about it. I would say everyone. Only we know why we're depressed, mad, sad or happy. A doctor could help you with your problem but he's only helping........
