It is okay for your son to watch Jerry Springer unless someone in your family is one of the guests.

Your 5-year-old might decide that Jerry Springer show behavior is appropriate as an example. Do you really want your son to emulate the trashy people found on Jerry Springer? The producers of that show purposely find the most disgusting, trashy people that they can just so people like yourself can feel better about themselves.

Take your son to the park, instead. He'll thank you when he's an adult.

If you have to ask then I think you know the answer to this question. I have to agree with others who have replied to this question. Most of what you see on Springer is low life trashy people who are nothing more than paid performers acting out some poorly written script. I think an hour spent WITH your child doing an outdoor activity such as going to the park, bike riding, going for a walk or simply talking to your son would be far better time than letting him sit in front of the TV and having Springer "educate" him. Think about it........his mind absorbs everything he sees at this point. And is this what you want him to remember? Is this how you want him to think life really is? People beating the crap out of each other? People HATING one another? People sleeping with each others siblings? (and the list goes on). If you cant spend the time with him personally, turn on PBS, or Blues Clues or something that is AGE appropriate and something from which he will benefit educationally. He will surely benefit in more ways than YOU will ever know.

On one hand, it is wrong for ANYONE to watch Jerry Springer. On the other hand, when I was 5 I loved, Loved, LOVED the Benny Hill Show. For the time (1970's) it was considered adult material, but to a 5 year old, watching an overweight british man chasing women in their underwear is HILARIOUS. 5 and 6 year olds really don't get it. To them it is just funny.

Yes, you are wrong. Try asking your child's pediatrician. Wait, you probably wouldn't want to hear what he/she says. It's safer to ask strangers right? My sister let her son watch Cops from age three. I didn't agree with her either.

My son watches PBS cartoons, Saturday morning Nick Jr. cartoons, and G-rated videos/movies. That's it. We don't watch any TV while he's around either. Even if a daytime show's content is OK, often the commercials aren't. Actually, a lot of daytime TV isn't appropriate either (talk shows and soap operas for instance). My son is four. I figured I'd let him be a kid for a while before he learns about the dregs of society.

omega woman, you are right on!
we don't have cable, i don't want it!
all the commercials and the subsequent "gimme gimme gimme"
i'm not going to cave in to commercial pressure. i will not have the tv dictate what kind of cereal my son eats!
my son has a dvd and vhs library that any kid would envy (or adult for that matter)

oh, nvsweets,
what the H E L L is wrong with you? do you have any decent judgment at all? let me guess, he eats whatever he wants, wears whatever he wants. does he listen to rap too? lady, you don't deserve your child. ask a social worker, and i guarantee you'll wind up under investigation by the state. you're a poor excuse for a mother, and you need to grow up. you can't let your son watch something like that! there's no morality to it, there's nothing constructive he'll get out of it! you're feeding this garbage to a very impressionable and hungry young brain. all because YOU find his impressions of it to be funny? lady, you are warped. get help before you really warp your kid too, if you haven't already

Depends on how you look at it. If he doesn't show much difference from if he didn't watch it, it probably isn't having an effect on his mind. I know this girl who is 8 and her parents let her play Grand Theft Auto and watch Beavis And Butt-Head, and it doesn't seem to give her bad values. But really, it depends on the child. Watch it with him, and when someone gets hit in the head with a chair, look at your son and say, "you know that's wrong right? Don't do it." Works every time.

Yes...I think it is great that you would expose your child to the lowest life forms of American society...Im sure he will grow up to be a well educated loser like the people on Springer...Perhaps you should consider going on the show with him and asking Jerry himself......

I wouldn't let him watch it - he is seeing the exploitation of the lowest examples of humanity. Is this where you want him to draw his generalizations and ideas about the character of his fellow man? I disagree that "he;s going to see this stuff anyway, so teach him all about every aspect of life right now". If that's so, take away Santa Clause and pop in some porn vids. Why not? Learning about that is "part of growing up", right? Bull - he is too young to understand and be ready to deal with many of life's issues.

Thats up to you, but remeber his mind is like a sponge and everything he see's he's going to remember it, and Jerry Springer isn't that great of a role model to follow.
