The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland comprises the countries of Scotland, Wales and England, which make up Great Britain, with the 6 counties of Northern Ireland (or Ulster).

The Kingdoms of Scotland and England were united under King James VI of Scotland, I of England in 1603 with the Act of Union formalising the union in 1707. The Crown of England had controlled the Principality of Wales since the early 13th centuary. Prior to Irish independance in the early 20th centuary the UK included all of the island of Ireland, but since Eire gained independance only Ulster is included in the UK.

Additionally the UK includes the Channel Islands (Jersey, Guernsey, Aldernay and Sark) and the Isle of Man. Plus there are many UK dependant territories around the world such as Gibralter, Ascencion Island, Saint Helena, The Falklands and Saint Georgia amongst others.
