We can not answer a question like this with a simple yes or no. This is because of the fact that there are many kinds of people in the world. First of all, some people are not religious and so they do not fit inot the question you ask at all. Then we have some people who may paray more when they are ill or facing an adverse event. But there are others who are religious but do not belive in a god that will grant them anything they ask for through parayer. Not every religios person is of the same relgion. This means that they do not all believe the same things. So some people do and some people don't. It also depends on how you choose to define being sporitual or religious. If we as the question in this yahoo form: What does it mean to be religious? or What does it mean to be spiritual? or What is the difference between being spriitual and religious? we would get many differnt answers. And at universities and in books these questions are discussed in depth and argued about often and have been so.

If you wanted to know the answer to this question in a serious manner you could refine the question to a smaller group of people and do a study about that group. For example you coulod choose a group of people from one religion and interview them. Then you could create what is called a "qualitative" study based on the responses. Your question is interesting and falls into a broad field of social sciences and humanities research. The probelm is it is far to general to do any serious justice too.

I know some people who pray more when they are in a lously situation and think it is very common. In my own opinion I would simply say yes but know that I am just generalising.

I think this would be true up to a point, but then after too much adversity some tend to turn away from religion.
This would not be true in people of the sort of Job.

Spiritual and religion are two distinct and different concepts. Do you access your spirit in adversity? Or do you lean on your religious teachings at that time? They would not be the same answer.

Who else you gonna call? Ghostbusters? Anytime someones back is up against the wall and they need help they're gonna call on God if they know Him to any degree. The two are only directly related in that you know where to turn in time of need. The Fire dept doesn't have anything to do with the fire until they are called upon.

Hmm a different question than what I first thought, but yes that observation is very true.
I think it is the feeling of hopelessness that compels this though, so you reach out for whatever is your definition of a higher power, what do you think?

There is an old Japanese saying, it goes; "Danger coming, God at heart. Danger past, God forgotten."
