I am going though slight depression. I do not want to go on any pills so I was wondering what would be the best way to deal with it so my family can deal with me.

First I would ask - how do you know it's a "slight" depression? If you're feeling depressed because of a situation that's going on in your life right now, you would treat the depression differently from one where it's been recurring over the years. Medication is not the solution for all types of depression. First of all you should get an evaluation with a professional to figure out if this is (1) depression from having to adjust to a difficult situation, (2) an underlying mild depression that keeps coming up over the years, or (3) a more severe depressive episode or cycle. You also want to evaluate how much other things are affected - like your sleep, eating, sex life, relationships, work, etc. You also need to be open about how much (if any) drugs or alcohol you use and whether that is making it worse or masking deeper symptoms. You also want to talk openly about any self-harming thoughts or behaviors and how often they occur (if at all). At the end of the evaluation, the professional can help you decide whether medication is one good option (or not), or whether counseling is enough, or whether you need both. Ultimately, you have to decide whether you want to follow through with medication if it's recommended, so you'll want to get all your questions answered at that time. You can also ask about alternative options for healing - like whether herbs, meditation/yoga, homeopathy, etc. can be of help in your case.
Each person's case is different, and it's important to consult with a professional who can provide you with some scientific basis for their recommendations.
Good luck to you and I hope you take that first (really hard) step towards getting help!

I have battled depression most of my life. I have also studied it for just about as many years. I really feel like depression varies by individual. The roots of your depression may be different than mine and so the treatment for you would be different than it would for me. I do know that a person does not have to live with depression. There are treatments available. Medications have come a long way and through trial and error many people find a medication that works for them. It is also good to look into ways of overcoming the underlying reasons for depression through some kind of counseling. Please do not give up hope. You will feel better again.

If you had a physical problem, like diabetes, would you take a pill to make your health better? Of course you would!!! Why deprive your mental health? You may have a natural need for supplements that come with antidepressants. Go to the doctor and tell him this. Take the therapy for a little while and when you start to feel better, continue to take it and ask your family how they feel about your behavior. It's hard enough being depressed; it hurts you and everyone around you and you may not even know it. Get some help, please.

And "battle" is exactly the right word, too, isn't it?

I'd suggest that for the first step, you go to see a therapist. Find out what he or she thinks. It's very helpful to have a professional's opinion.

Then, you can chart a course. Knowing that you're trying to help yourself can be a very uplifing experience all by itself.

all the best to you. You'll make it!!
