I have a bag of mini marshmallows I was going to use for a Rick Krispy treat type of cookie. The bag says they expired a year ago. They are a little hard, but they taste ok to me. Are they rotten or do they just dry out?

Uh-oh. There is gelatin in marshmallows? Ugh.

Ok. Does anyone know of a good substitute for marshmallows?

They do not go bad, they are just sugar. But they will get stale like you said with them getting hard. They cannot harm you though.

Marshmallows don't go bad. They just get hard and you won't die from eating them. You don't have to throw them out. I looked it up, there are no substitutes for marshmallows. Sorry! I hope this helps.

once the bag has been opened and air is allowed to get in the marshmallows just go stale. of course in hot weather they start to melt and stick to each other creating a big mess. you might get in touch with the people who make the marshmallows and find out what you can do to make them soft again

Hi: I've neverseen mold on a marshmallow, Similarly sugar does not appear to mold. However, we all know and love the fact that
marshmallows get crunchy hard.

They do harden and they're hard to eat when hardened. But you could add them to hot chocolate. For your recipe, I suggest you go to the store and get some new mini marshmallows. But besure they're for people not for fish.

mom always added those hard old ones to hot coco, (they melt)and I'm still here, there mostly sugar, so if not molding, you are good to go, I keep mine in a glass jar, they seem to last much longer

I would just fork over the small amount for a new bag... But I don't think they go bad...

I would throw them out. They could be rancid by now and even if you could eat them, they'd probably make you sick. Don't know of any substitue though.
