Because cats are smarter than dogs.....

Actually one of my cats doesn't bury his poop, which give the dogs a clear signal that the snack bar has opened for business. Best I can figure, he is trying to establish that he is alpha cat. Unfortunately for me my little calico decided she was boss long ago, and the biggest of the three is really a pussycat.

My dog ate his poop when he was a puppy...I asked the vet and he said it was very common. I guess it just smells so much like warm steamy food he couldn't resist the second go at it (yuck). He hardly does it anymore. He also likes to get at the cat's tray and eat her poop. Again, I figure it's the foodlike aroma (there is no accounting for taste) and he would probably eat the cat if we didn't watch out. I think (not an expert) cats bury their droppings because they are trying to hide from predators...like dogs. Cats mark territory with urine, not feces. Feces smells like food and would attract predators. Make sense?

Some dogs have a certain malnutrition disorder that leads them to eat their poop. They eat it so they can take back minerals, vitamins or other things that they might not be getting from their usual food. Cats bury their poop for territorial reasons and because they are neat freaks.

I don't know where you got the idea that dogs eat their poop. Maybe you should feed your dog? Some dogs do, but they are usually abused or in an unstable environment.

IT IS TRUE THAT IF SOME DOGS WILL EAT THEIR OWN FECES. MOST COMMONLY THIS HAPPENS WITH DOGS WHO ARE IN CAGES OR SMALL ENCLOSED AREAS. IT IS THOUGHT THAT DOGS INSTINCTIVELY DO THIS TO RID OF THE FECES FROM THEIR LIVING AREA. ITS KINDOF LIKE THEIR WAY OF CLEANING UP.SAME IDEA WHEN A DOG OR CAT HAS PUPPIES/KITTENS AND EATS THE "AFTERBIRTH" AND UMBILICAL CORDS. ITS CLEANING. ALSO--BEFORE THERE WAS LITTER--CATS DIDNT COVER THERE POOP THE WAY WE SEE NOW. IF YOU SEE A CAT GO TO THE BATHROOM IN GRASS--THEY STILL ATTEMPT TO "COVER" IT JUST LIKE A DOG. bUT THERE'S NO LITTER. SO--I HOPE THIS HELPS...
