If you are worried, I would first study the NYC transit and bus maps, pick up copies at any token booth or check out the website. For your first trip you should be aware of exactly where you are going and of alternate routes in case service is disrupted (especially on the weekends when they are doing a lot of construction).

For your first few trips maybe you should travel with your folks or some friends. Do not have them tell you how to get where you are going, they should let you try to navigate.

The best thing is never to appear scared or nervous on the subway, if needed sit in the conductors' car. The subway is the best way to get a cross-view of NYC life, every type of person in the city takes the subway and you get a real lesson in life just watching the different people going to and fro.

It is the best way to travel! (Well, except late at night . . .)

If you don't feel comfortable with it, don't. i wouldn't let my preteen take the bus or train in the city alone. I was in highschool when I first took a bus alone to the mall. It was a nonstop trip so, it was easy.

your still a little young and the trains can get really confusing. Keep practicing with an adult until your maybe 14. Too many freaks out there if you need to ask for directions.

since ur still young, bring a friend, make sure you have a cell phone for emergencies, and don't walk alone in dark place, wear heel, or expensive flashy jewelry
