If I ask you - "Why can't you lead a simpler life and use the excess money to help the poor and the down trodden ? " What is your answer to this? For example.. Why can't you choose a simpler and less sophisticated car or house and use that money for saving a family from hunger??

The question is Which is greater? Our comfort or Their necessities?? I am not being judgemental here...It's a question that I am asking myself and struggling for an answer!

I think that do not know any better!

I am a Christian and believe in living modestly.
In the US we have been conditioned to live a certain way and what from a 3rd world country looks like an elaborate lifestyle we here in America don't see it that way. People with a house, cars and food every day can still feel poor in America because of what we have been brainwashed to believe that we need. Do we really need cellphones TVs etc No but not everyone is on the same page and some may never get there. God will teach them that when they are ready to learn it. I do also believe that not everyone has to give everything away they just need to not be governed by possessions! BTW Jesus had nothing and gave away what he did get.

Whatever we have as christians, whether it be a " rich" lifestyle, or a " poor" lifestyle, we should be willing to share that with others. I believe that sometimes God blesses some people with money more than others so that they can specifically help someone with that money. I personally am not rich or poor. I am pretty much middle class. I give what I can. Sometimes, I can not always give money. I give my time, my friendship, my patience, my expertise, by volunteering, being a leader at bible study, stopping to help people if I see that they need help. And I never throw things away like clothes or anything. I make sure that if I am going to get rid of something, that it goes somewhere where it will be needed. There are many different ways to help and I feel that God leads you to the places or people that need help.

George, you ask a great question. As Christians, we should be willing to give up more so that others may eat, be clothed, and have shelter. The Bible specifically states that if you have two coats we should give one to one who does not. I think one of the reasons so many Christians are not willing to live a simpler life is that we see so much what others have, and desire to have it too. On the other hand, the ability to obtain these things, are a gift from God.And sometimes these same things we buy can be used to help others. It is important that we realize what is more important to God. Meeting our needs or the needs of others.

You do what you can with what you have. If you can give without seriously threatening your wellbeing such as the payment of rent/mortgage/food then great. You can also give of your time to help people. I do and it is far more rewarding than just giving money. You also need to consider with money that you need to earn to live be able to give.

These days so many worthy charities and childrens hospices are needing physical and monetary support and because of work and lifestyles people cannot give or are not as willing to give as much as would have been possible in past years. By helping the needy not just through money brings them comfort and you great joy especially to see someone smile and say thanks.

Its worth a million pounds.

Well, where do you draw the line between helping others and taking care of yourself?
It's one thing if someone only thinks about their own lot in life and uses all their efforts to further their own pursuits. But someone in the same situation may have nice things, but also choose to use their time and assets to volunteer to help others. Most of the time, simplifying and leading a simple life is what is needed to allow us to buy out the time to help others, though. But we don't want to put ourselves in a position where we will need help, just because we give all our comforts up to help others.

It's a matter of being content with what we need to live or what we have available and always remembering to keep an eye out for whatever we can do to help our neighbor.

Because I fight the sins of selfishness/want/envy/debt. We are human, and it's hard to give up our comforts for someone elses'. As a family, we're pretty strapped at times raising 4 kids, but I realize we are way better off than a whole lot, that is why we try to do what we can. It really is not too hard, if you start with "faith-steps". This site really showed us how we can help with just a little, and how we can increase it. I pray for my heart to have the love that Jesus had for those around Him.

I do give up some materials thing and help the less fortunate. It's not just being a good Christian, it's also common sense. You don't need a brand new car, or a 7000-square foot McMansion with cathedral ceilings.

I do, both cars over 20 years old, contribute to the orphanages in underdeveloped nations, work for a ministry and receive very low wages.

Some of us really do put our money where our mouth is; not all christians are hypocrites.

Question for you; why do non-christians complain so much about the poor and hungry of this world and expect the christian to do it all?

As a christian, I ask that question myself. I'm single , have a condo, and have an average income. I see a lot of Christians in my area who have higher than average incomes, live in nice homes, have nice cars, have spouse and kids. Not to judge them, but I think they're ignorant of what's going on the other side of the world, even other religions. They're just busy worrying about their own problems. They have to actually visit those places to experience their suffering and different lifestyles.

We are barely eeking by as it is but even so, I always help people out if I can. For example, there was a family next to us who had been homeless and had given all their money to rent the trailer next to us and so they had no food. Well, I had no money lol but I did have some extra food, beans and rice and things that I sent over to them. Is that what you're asking?
