It's called "kneading". When they are nursing off their mother for milk, they do that to the mother to keep the milk flowing freely. So they interpret this as comfort when they are adults.

For one it means you have a very calm cat and I would say very loving cat
Ever see a kitten nurse? And moving their paws back an forth an purring
That's what they are calming down that cat is doing now, when they get older..You can get him or her a special blanket to do it on if you don't want her on you doing it.
Plus a cats purr is very soothing for a person after a hard day of work.

whilst they take a poke, they choose interest. Poking is diverse than kneading. this is finished with the two paws flexing. A poke is oftentimes with one paw, likely the appropriate because of the fact, have faith it or no longer, cats are oftentimes "perfect handed...ah, pawed" purely like maximum bears are perfect-pawed. (American Indians found out that if confronted by potential of a undergo on a path, they might %. up a rock or stick and throw it on the undergo's perfect edge, distracting it and then working previous on the undergo's left which become it rather is "susceptible" edge...real!) attempt stroking on the two factors of the muzzle from front to back, or purely placed your hand out and permit the cat stroke you. they are going to rub your hand. Cats actual have glands on the top close to the ears as I keep in mind that circulate away a fragrance for different cats. whilst the action happens he/she is in result marking you as inner maximum sources. Be flattered!

As most people know, dogs are pack animals, so they consider their "owners" as the leaders of the packs -- the ones who provides the food and shelter for everyone in the family. Cats consider their "owners" as their mothers -- even if the one who provides the food and shelter is a male. Mothers give milk. The cat treats you as its mother by kneading.

Since the time of their birth, cats have used this method at nursing to help suckle from their mother. It is actually a comfort action for them. I have not seen a cat that doesn't do it. Relax, if you're cat is doing it, you're cat is relaxed, not stressed and completely comfurtable.

LOL......I call it kneeding bread. It drives me nuts!!
I'm not sure......I think it's because thats how they provide the milk to flow when they are nursing and it's just instinctual to do it.
I've noticed that cats that are taken from the mother too soon do it more.
I could be totally wrong on this explanation, however.

The cat wants some attention from someone like you and they also want you to comfort them until they feel like they have gotten enough love from that person-like you. Its like what they do when they were kittens when they feed off their mother. Its just simple. The cat likes you. It just hurts when they scratch you or dig their nails into your skin.

Mine does it constantly to me. I've heard that its their way of "marking" you as "theirs" and it means they love you and feel safe and happy around you. Although...mine has a habit of doing it whenever she knows she did something wrong and you haven't found it out yet.
